High Aims Straight to Caloundra Cup 2014

The Tattersall’s Cup at Eagle Farm Racecourse this weekend has been ruled out for the Victorian mare High Aims who will instead be saved for a shot at the 2014 Caloundra Cup Saturday week.

Mornington-based horseman David Brideoake, who trains in partnership with David Feek, confirmed to Racing Network this morning that they wouldn’t be accepting for the Southern Image four-year-old to race in the $200,000 Group 3 Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Cup (2200m).

She will miss the closing Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival meeting, where she would have gotten in on the 54kg minimum, and have another week off before the $200,000 Listed Caloundra City Cup (2400m) over the mile and a half on the Sunshine Coast on June 28.

High Aims has had three runs this time in, but looked like she needed a week off after a below par effort in her Queensland debut last weekend.

After a first-up victory in the Tatura Cup over the mile, and a close third behind Crucial at Ipswich also over 1600m on May 3, she went up to 2150m for the Listed Ipswich Cup last Saturday.

Carrying 55kg with Dwayne Dunn aboard High Aims could only manage to run four and a half lengths away ninth to the Tony Gollan-trained winner Brave Ali.

That’s an effort Brideoake is confident she could improve on if the known wet tracker could get a rain affected track, High Aims having won three and placed second in two of her five starts on Heavy ground.

“She’s a mare who can run 2400 metres, but she needs a wet track to show her best, and we figured our best chance of getting a wet track might be at Caloundra,” Brideoake said.

“She can really run a strong 2400 metres but she’s a known wet-tracker, so that’s why we bought her up here (to Brisbane) because we figured we might get some wet ground.

“I thought she ran well last week and wasn’t that far away.

“If it had been a bit wetter she’d have been right in the finish.”

Tattersall’s Cup weights meanwhile are led by Ciaron Maher’s Eagle Farm Cup runner-up Mr O’Ceirin (59kg) coming off a fifth in the Brisbane Cup (2400m) from June 7.

They are followed by last start Toowoomba Cup winning Kiwi raider Military Move (58kg), the Peter Moody-trained Wish Come True (55.5kg) and Rex Lipp’s Queensland Oaks winner Tinto (54.5kg) before the rest of the field are on 54kg.

The Tattersall’s Cup 2014 field is due for release tomorrow morning so stay tuned.
