Tinto Claims 2014 Queensland Oaks

Talented stayer Tinto has caused the day’s big upset at Eagle Farm Racecourse this afternoon, flashing home to beat resounding pre-post favourite Arabian Gold by more than a length in the featured Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m); Sister Souss running on to claim third.

Jumping from the gates well, the Red Dazzler filly settled in prime condition on the heels of early leaders Tornado Miss, Raunchy Rocker and Execute At Dawn, who set a reasonable pace when passing the post for the first time.

With the leaders noticeably stepping up the tempo over the back straight and approaching the final bend, jockey Tim Bell tracked Tinto up towards a clear running line slightly wider than the main pack, finding an uninhibited line upon reaching the final straight and displaying a keen turn of foot to stroll home and claim a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing.

Trainer Rex Lipp secured just a second Group 1 victory in saddling Tinto to victory in the 2014 Queensland Oaks, and was thrilled to get one back on Arabian Gold after finishing second in the Group 1 The Roses (2000m) last time out.

“Tim said if I can keep within distance of her and keep her where he wants her, we’ll outstay her because we have a better staying filly than she is,” Lipp said after the race.

“This is one of the ones I wanted to win, I love staying races – I prefer staying races to the other sprinting races to be quite honest.

“We’ve dug deep and do our best with what we’ve got.”

Jockey Tim Bell delivered an exceptionally timed ride on Tinto in the 2014 Queensland Oaks, and was understandably thrilled in claiming a maiden Group 1 victory.

“What a fabulous filly. To come through everyone was a little bit hesitant that she’d get the trip,” Bell said.

“I straightened up under the pump, looked across at Blake and he was going good, but I knew he wasn’t going to be able to outstay me.

“I sort of sat outside him on the run, he was looking to get out and I was making sure he was going to have to go for the run; the run has opened up for him and he did sprint, but I had too much momentum for him.

“This filly is one of the toughest three-year-olds I’ve ever ridden.”

Claiming just a third race victory in her 12th competitive start this afternoon, Tinto is now likely to return to the spelling paddock ahead of a busy spring preparation.
