Moody Duo to Run in 2014 Doomben Cup Field

Melbourne’s top trainer Peter Moody has confirmed connections will be accepting for two of his three Doomben Cup 2014 entries for this Saturday with Fat Al and Floria to represent the stable.

Moody nominated for a trio of stayers in this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Titan Energy Services Doomben Cup (2000m) however American-bred stallion Kitten On The Run won’t line-up in the classic this weekend.

“Kitten On The Run has gone to the paddock for a spell,” Moody confirmed.

They were a $51 roughie in the pre-field Doomben Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au following a last start fourth to Brisbane Cup-bound Zephyron in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) at Rosehill on May 10.

The only horse at longer odds to score an upset Doomben Cup result this year is Wayne Hills’ mare Perfect Start ($201), the Kiwi raider having failed her Australian debut last Saturday when seventh to Pretty Pins in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m).

The best of Moody’s likely runners meanwhile is Floria ($31) while Fat Al is also a $51 outsider, the duo having had their first serious piece of work in Brisbane on Tuesday morning.

“Floria and Fat Al will run in the Doomben Cup and they both worked over a mile this morning up there,” Moody told Racenet.

“I haven’t heard what times they ran but they seem happy with them up there.”

Six-year-old Savabeel mare Floria comes to Brisbane on the back of a nice Adelaide run from April 26 when runner-up to Tango’s Daughter, defeated a mere long neck in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m).

She also boasts a mile win in the Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1600m) at Caulfield from last November and so is not without some class.

Fat Al meanwhile enjoyed a Bendigo win in mid-March when defeating Bel Thor by a length in the Listed Golden Mile (1600m).

Their three runs since however have been below par especially when outclassed to run 12th and then 15th in the George Ryder Stakes and Doncaster Mile respectively during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Their most recent effort was also disappointing when they went to the Gold Coast on May 3 and were well beaten when nearly six lengths off the winner in the Group 2 AD Hollindale Stakes (1800m).

Guy Walter’s Hollindale Stakes winner Streama on the other hand sits at the top of the Doomben Cup odds paying $3.80.

That’s an equal price with the Hawkes-trained son of Zabeel Leebaz, the four-year-old having entered the arena after their Hawkesbury Gold Cup victory last time out.

The other big three in Doomben Cup contention are then Warnambool Cup winner Akzar ($4.60), the Chris Waller-trained Junoob ($5) out to improve on their fourth in the Hollindale when unsuited to the mud track and runner-up that day Mr O’Ceirin ($8).
