Atlantic Jewel Odds-On in Caulfield Stakes Betting 2013

After the defection of It’s A Dundeel from the 2013 Caulfield Stakes on Saturday it is no surprise Cox Plate favourite Atlantic Jewel has opened odds-on to take out the Caulfield Guineas Day classic.

In her final run before attempting a win in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship, the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) to run at Moonee Valley on October 26, Mark Kavanagh’s turf queen Atlantic Jewel will jump the punters’ pick in the $400,000 Group 1 Cathay Pacific Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Winner of the 2011 Thousand Guineas and the 2012 All Aged Stakes, the now five-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock remains only lightly raced with the weekend’s run to be just her 11th start.

Atlantic Jewel suffered a tendon injury last autumn which ruled her out of racing for 16 months.

She made a stunning return at Caulfield on August 31 however to become a triple Group 1 winner with an easy 2.5 length win in the Memsie Stakes (1400m).

Another easy kill followed a fortnight later in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at the Valley before Atlantic Jewel went down in a shock loss for her first defeat last start.

Defeated a mere nose by Murray Baker’s It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) the mare has been robbed of her chance to exact revenge with the five-time elite level winning Kiwi ruled out of the Caulfield Stakes due to a hoof abscess.

The mighty mare then will face a diminutive field of just five rivals and is deservedly at a Black Caviar-esque price of $1.40 in the current Caulfield Stakes betting markets.

There are then two other single figure fancies to score a massive upset with her stablemate Super Cool ($7) and the reigning Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon ($9) with the rails run from barrier one.

Kavanagh’s Australian Cup winning Fastnet Rock gelding Super Cool has had three runs this time in, the best being their first-up third to Atlantic Jewel in the Memsie.

The four-year-old is now looking to improve on their last start ninth to Happy Trails in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington – the track and distance their Group 1 triumph was achieved back in March.

Green Moon meanwhile also comes off a ninth place finish having been well beaten in the Underwood, the Lloyd Williams-owned galloper set to improve getting up to more distance on the weekend.

The next best in betting at $10 is then the Chris Waller-trained Foreteller, winner of the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) in Sydney during the autumn, who comes off a last start 12th in the Underwood.

Before that however they were bagging their second Group 1 trophy with a tight victory over Puissance De Lune in the Makybe Diva Stakes over the Flemington mile.

The roughies rounding out the Caulfield Stakes field and odds are then David Hayes’ Galileo seven-year-old Spacecraft ($81) and Green Moon’s stablemate Massiyn ($101) who was runner-up to Royal Diamond in the Irish St Leger last year.
