The Bart Cummings-trained clear pre-race favourite in the $350,000 Group 1 AJC Australian Oaks (2400m) Faint Perfume was no match for Gai Waterhouse?s up-and-coming filly Once Were Wild on Saturday, as the lesser favoured runner blasted to her first Group 1 victory at Randwick.

Still in just her first preparation, Once Were Wild has gone from winning a maiden in January to celebrating Group 1 glory on Saturday in the 2010 AJC Oaks.

A daughter of Johannesburg, Once Were Wild ($9) ridden by star hoop Nash Rawiller, began brilliantly snaring an early lead, which they gave up mid-race in a tactical move by Rawiller to reserve the filly?s energy and give him time to choose his path.

After sitting towards the centre of the pack, at the 600m Once Were Wild displayed an impressive turn of foot making her move.

With 300m to go Once Were Wild had turned the AJC Oaks into her own race, leading by an emphatic margin.

Only one filly put in a solid chase, Faint Perfume ($2.30), coming from second last up to second position by the winning post.

At the line Once Were Wild held an imposing three and a half length margin ahead of Faint Perfume, who was themselves a solid five lengths clear of the nearest rival, third placegetter Run For Naara ($12).

Second favourite, Valdemoro, the glamour filly who was expected to turn the AJC Oaks into a showdown between herself and Faint Perfume, was very one-paced finishing a disappointing eighth.

Once Were Wild now boasts an impressive six wins from eight career starts with Saturday?s win elevating her total earnings to over $330,000.

The feature race at Randwick on Saturday was the $1.5 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) won by the Chris Waller-trained Rangirangdoo. Rangirangdoo was ridden by Nash Rawiller, giving the in-form hoop his first of two Group 1 wins at the meeting after being caught in the middle of a tug-of-war to secure his services in the Doncaster.

Other highlights of the day included Ortensia?s victory in the $300,000 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) and the $125,000 Group 3 South Pacific Classic (1400m) where Star Of Octagonal won ahead of Neeson.
