Beaten Up Heads Hill Stakes Field 2013

After defecting from the meeting’s headline race, Chris Waller’s Doomben Cup champion Beaten Up will have a somewhat easier assignment at Randwick this Saturday racing in the 2013 Hill Stakes.

Originally the imported Beat Hollow gelding was among the entries for the $350,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m).

However Waller, who will still saddle-up four live wire chances in the Group 1 including last year’s winner Shoot Out and Caulfield Cup fancy Hawkspur, has opted to run Beaten Up in the $200,000 Group 2 Bacardi Hill Stakes (2000m) instead.

Scheduled as Race 7 at 4:30pm (AEST) the Hill Stakes threatens to steal the show on Saturday attracting a top class field of 12 stayers – the George Main featuring a field of just nine.

Heading the field for the weight-for-age feature, a classic lead-up to some of the spring’s big staying majors, Beaten Up has drawn barrier nine and will be ridden by Hugh Bowman.

Bowman has ridden the five-year-old for both of their runs this time in when fourth in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) and second to stablemate Hawkspur in the Group 1 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).

Stepping up to the 2000m on Saturday is set to suit too as they won the Doomben Cup over the distance during the winter.

As in the George Main, Waller’s Hill Stakes contingent is an imposing one as he’s also accepted for four other runners.

The most notable is Hawkspur who has been dually accepted with a decision pending.

“I’m still undecided about which race to run Hawkspur,” Waller told News Limited earlier in the week.

His other hopes are then last year’s Melbourne Cup fourth-placed Kelinni, Brisbane Cup winner Moriarty coming off a fourth in the Chelmsford and French import Bayrir lining up in their third start down under.

The other big name acceptor for the Hill Stakes then comes from rival Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse with her reigning The Metropolitan winner Glencadam Gold.

Sixth in the Melbourne Cup to Green Moon last spring in Victoria the Refuse To Bend gelding had a shocking autumn but is out to improve this season despite their first-up eighth to Hawkspur.

Other notable hopes then include the Lloyd Williams-owned Masked Marvel in gate three, the Peter Moody-trained Italian import Sneak A Peek and High Chaparral four-year-old Kingdoms who was third in the Australian Derby back in April.

The full Hill Stakes 2013 field, gates, hoops and weight allocations are detailed in the table below.
