2024 Queensland Guineas Field & Betting Update on Derby Lead-Up

There may have been a number of early scratchings for the Queensland Guineas 2013 at Eagle Farm Racecourse this Saturday but all the major players are still in the mix for the Queensland Oaks Day classic – betting tips and exotic selections for which are detailed below.
This year’s $350,000 Group 2 Sky Racing Queensland Guineas (1400m) is set to run as Race 6 at 3:00pm (AEST) and the field is at capacity with 18 runners, three of the four emergencies gaining a start thanks to the early scratching of the Robert Smerdon-trained Saturn Rock and the Mick Price-trained duo of Al Aneed and Eximius.
Two three-year-olds currently share top spot in the Queensland Guineas odds at bookmaker.com.au with the Peter Snowden-trained Academus and Kelso Wood’s guaranteed Stradbroke Handicap runner next week Sizzling both at $5.
In an open affair plenty of other hopefuls are hot on their heels in the Guineas markets including last start Fred Best Classic winner Platinum Kingdom and runner-up Boban at $6 each.
But are these top four fancies really the ones to lock into your Queensland Guineas trifecta and first four bets?
Or is there an upset Queensland Guineas result on the cards from a longer priced runner such as Academus’s stablemate Complicate ($9.50) who is actually trainer Snowden’s pick for the Staddie ballot exemption on offer, or even the Bart Cummings-trained Lunar Rise ($12) last seen running a brave second in the Inglis 3YO Scone Guineas over the 1400m on May 18.
To save you time scrolling through the Guineas form below the Races.com.au tipsters have our inside selections on the feature so you know which three-year-olds to back and which to sack in tomorrow’s clash.
#11 Boban ($6)
Nice price at $6 for this Chris Waller-trained hopeful that’s bursting for a win after two close seconds. Were a good Warwick Farm winner in April before just being found out, defeated a long neck by Limes in the Hawkesbury Guineas at a tough track. Last start were three quarters off the winner in the Fred Best, which for mine is the form race for the Guineas, but should be ready to turn the tables here with a good run from a great barrier (4).
#1 Sizzling ($5)
Think there’s definite improvement ready to come from this local whose past two starts have been disappointing on paper. They haven’t lost their opening starts this time in through lack of guts or trying however and if things go there way think they can tap into that Group 1 winning form from last winter which saw them post four straight wins including two on Heavy tracks which is a chance again this weekend. Also wider draw will suit if the track is muddy and with blinkers on at request of top jockey Chris Munce they will be sharper.
#6 Platinum Kingdom ($6)
Was a real toss up here between the in-form Sydney galloper Academus and Platinum Kingdom who beat them home in the Fred Best last start. While Peter Snowden hasn’t knocked the form of his runner, and who could, he was quick to say Complicate was the one he’d probably back and that has us a little worried. So sticking with the form of the Group 3 Fred Best and backing the Kiwi who hasn’t done much wrong since coming over in April. First-up winner on a Heavy (9) at Randwick over 1400m, close fourth in the Hawkesbury Guineas (forgive at that track) and then won last start over a very similar field. Actually, should we move this one up to the win??
