Mr Moet to Target 2013 Australian Cup

Lark Hill trainer Adam Durrant is aiming for the sky with his Railway Stakes winning five-year-old Mr Moet who, after the Perth Summer Racing Carnival, will begin preparations for an ambitious Sydney Autumn Carnival raid targeting the Australian Cup 2013.

Mosayter gelding Mr Moet scored an upset victory as a $20 roughie in last Saturday’s Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) winning Perth’s richest race over the hot favourite Luckygray.

The plan is to back the dual Group winner up Saturday week, December 8, in the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) back at Ascot before their summer campaign culminates with a step up to 2100m for the $225,000 Group 2 C.B. Cox Stakes on December 22.

While their attention is firmly focused on continuing the horse’s magic run in WA before the year’s end, Durrant was also keen to name the $1 million Group 1 Dubai Australian Cup (2000m) at Victoria’s famous Flemington Racecourse on March 9 as the long-term aim for Mr Moet.

“The plan is to head into the Kingston Town Classic and Cox Stakes and then give the horse a short let-up and go interstate,” Durrant said.

“He showed he is up to weight-for-age when he won the Strickland Stakes last campaign.

“For a stayer to do what he did on Saturday, you don’t see too often.

“I think there is more improvement in him and the further they go the better he will like it.”

In the latest pre-field Kingston Town Classic betting markets beaten Railway Stakes favourite Luckygray remains the top pick at a quote of about $2.70.

Mr Moet meanwhile is still at double figures paying around $12, a generous price explained by the horses great first-up record but slightly less impressive second-up form, with the last horse to complete the Railway Stakes – Australian Cup double being the great Northerly during the 2000-2001 season.

Better Loosen Up also won the Railway Stakes (1989) and backed up in the Australian Cup running a brave second to champion galloper Vo Rogue the next autumn.

The other Group 1 winner from last Saturday, Jim Taylor’s unbeaten Barakey who made it 11 from 11 in the Winterbottom Stakes, is also Australian Cup Day-bound with the $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in their sights.
