Cox Shoots for 12th Success in Wodonga Cup 2012

Ace local trainer Brian Cox may have been admitted to hospital this week but that won’t stop him vying for his incredible 12th home town cup victory when he lines up multiple chances in the 2012 Wodonga Cup this Sunday.

Suffering from a kidney stone, for which he will be operated on this Thursday, Cox currently has three horses nominated for the $80,000 Listed Wodonga Cup (1590m) and will fight to be there trackside when they run in the track’s showcase event.

“I have been bed ridden since Monday with an infection delaying surgery,” Cox told the Border Mail.

“It will be a race against time if I’m feeling well enough to go to the races on Sunday.

“I haven’t got the faintest idea of when I would have last missed the race.

“If I get there, I get there – it’s no big deal.”

Cox won his first Wodonga Cup back in 1975 while his most recent success was in 2006 with Elbrus.

The best fancied of his trio is his last start Wangaratta winner This Cat’s Magic followed by Grandera gelding Murdoch’s Joy, both of which are assured of a start in the capacity 14 starter Wodonga Cup field.

His third entrant Minnie Downs however will rely on an attrition rate of at least four horses as the Clangalang mare, coming off a good fourth at Bendigo, currently sits 18th on the cup ballot.

Top-weight in the Wodonga Cup entries meanwhile is Peter White’s veteran nine-year-old Jungle Ruler (60kg) coming off a distant ninth in the Sandown Stakes which was their 114th career start.

Following Jungle Ruler in the Wodonga Cup weights are then eight-year-old Down Under Boy and the Quinton Scott-trained evergreen eight-year-old Another Prelate with 59kg.

Mornington-based Lord Vain gelding Another Prelate may be a veteran but they are racing in exceeltn form having won the Peninsula Cup over the mile at their home track by an easy four and a half lengths at the start of the month.

Other notable chances meanwhile include the Brendan McCarthy-trained duo of Regalmania coming off a close second at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day and Nice And Neat, Anne Maree Curran’s Berrigan Cup winner Brillanconi out for their third win on the trot and Meteor Shower who will be ridden by regular jockey Rebecca Williams.

Also in the mix is the Gerald Egan-trained Jetconi who is looking to secure their third straight win in the feature.

The Wodonga Cup may not hold black type status but it is a big country cups showdown sure to attract plenty of bets.
