The Spring Cup’s On Radar For Sincero

He was written off by most after his run in the QTC Cup but Sincero bounced back to prove himself as one of the best horses in Australia through his Stradbroke Handicap win.

His reward for the victory looks like being a shot at some of the biggest races in Australia during the spring carnival.

The Cox Plate is well and truly on the radar but so too could be a Caulfield Cup birth.

Both trainer Stephen Farley and jockey Jason Taylor believe Sincero has the makings of a genuine stayer.

To date he’s won twice at 1600m, but that’s the longest distance he’s ever contested.

Although the Stradbroke is only 1400m the manner in which he caught the incredibly tough Beaded and ran on past the post though indicates he’s well suited to a longer trip.

Taylor isn’t just saying this after winning the race either, in fact he made the suggestion the very first time he climbed on the horse.

“I rode him for the first time in a gallop on Wednesday morning and I said to Steve (Farley) when I jumped off that he gave me the feel of a 2000-metre horse,” Taylor said.

“The blinkers fired him up and that’s what we needed on Saturday.

“But I think without blinkers he would relax and get into a good rhythm and easily get over 2000 metres and maybe even further.”

It was a tremendous ride by Taylor to win the Stradbroke and to his credit he took a bit of a gamble to get the win.

Before the race he decided that there may not be as much pace as many though so he made the call to push forward a bit harder early.

“I decided to be a little bit positive early but not fire him up too much with the blinkers on first time,” Taylor said.

“I was surprised at how easily he got into a handy spot and then when I found the back of Beaded I really started to get confident.”

Pushing on to bigger trips would be another gamble on behalf of him and Farley given there is no real indication in pedigree that he’ll run over 2000m.

His sire Umatilla never won a race more than 1200m long.

His dam Yours As Always placed in four races, all of them at 1200m or less.

Having said this there is some evidence in the bloodlines with Umatilla having sired two winners over two miles.

Bohemiath won the Adeliade Cup and Streak claimed the Sydney Cup.

Sincero will spell ahead of a spring return but fortunately for Farley there’s not a lot for him to work while he’s in the paddock.

Sincero only had four runs this prep and with only one loss it’s a case of keeping him at his current level rather than forcing any big changes.
