McEvoy Has Sydney Tune-up Before Brisbane

Kerrin McEvoy is always considered to be among the top few jockeys in Australia and he’ll get a chance to once again prove his worth when he returns from injury in Sydney this weekend.

While McEvoy will be focused on his five rides in Sydney, you can be sure he’ll have one eye on the progress up in Brisbane as well.

McEvoy hasn’t ridden since he sustained two broken ribs in a race fall during the Sydney Cup when he as aboard Tinseltown.

He hasn’t been rushed back into racing with a full week of track work at Warwick Farm to make sure he was 100 percent fit.

Beaded

Beaded awaits McEvoy when he gets to Brisbane.

He’ll be at Randwick tomorrow but he has plenty of interest in the Brisbane Carnival with two horses on show which he’ll probably be riding in a couple of weeks time.

“I have been keeping an eye on the runners (in Queensland) since I’ve been out, there’s been plenty to watch and I’ll be doing the same (on Saturday),” McEvoy said.

“All being well I’ll be riding Beaded in the Stradbroke and possibly Peck in the Derby.”

McEvoy sustained a back injury less than 12 months ago and during that lay off period it was the Melbourne Cup Carnival that kept him going.

The Brisbane Carnival has offered that seem incentive this year and is the driving reason behind his speedy recovery.

“It’s always good to look at that to give you motivation,” he said.

“There’s Darley horses running every week and winning really well, and I want to be out there and carrying those colours to victory for the team.

“I’ve had a month off, the ribs have healed up well so I’m just hopeful that I can get the eye in and come back in winning form this weekend.”

McEvoy’s combination with the Darley franchise has already paid big dividends this year especially in the juvenile series with wins on Sepoy in the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper and then Helmet in the Sires Produce and Champagne Stakes.

Once again it could be a two-year-old that delivers for McEvoy this weekend with Abstract looking like his best chance on tomorrow’s card.

He’ll have to be right on his game form the outset though as he takes up that ride in his very first race of the day.

“I reckon my first ride back (is my best),” he said.

“She gave me a nice feel when she won at Randwick defeating Godspeed.

“It’s probably going to be different sort of ground on Saturday to what it was that day but she’s a nice Domesday filly.

“It’s a good race for this time of year but she’s got to be a chance.”

If he misses on Abstract at the start he might have to wait until the end of the day to get another good opportunity.

He’ll be aboard Scarf which is certainly in good form, only query would be the distance.

“His best trip might be a bit further in this sort of grade but he worked well during the week and he’s in with a chance for sure,” he said.
