2011 Adelaide Cup hopeful Lady Avacan has had to be put down after tragically breaking a leg during track work this morning.
Lady Avacan had been taking part in a slow morning track work routine when she suddenly broke down after being asked to quicken in pace.
The six-year-old mare was a serious contender for the 2011 Adelaide Cup after placing a gallant third in the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes on March 5, 2011.
“We were pretty keen on her, she’d never raced over two mile, but Sue used to work her during training and she’d run the distance,” said owner Wally Polniak.
“Sadly now we’ll never know if she could win a cup like that.”
Lady Avacan was owned by a syndicate of 11 owners, who are all still reeling from the loss of their talented mare.
The Akhadan mare won 10 of her 43 starts and earned almost $250,000 in prize money.
“She gave us a lot of pleasure and made some money for us as well and it’s just sad she’s gone this way,” Mr Polniak said.
“It’s just a freak accident, that’s all it was.”
The current favourite for the 2011 Adelaide Cup is King Diamond, who is paying $3.60 for the win at Luxbet.
