A final field of 12 sprinters lead by Moody’s mighty mare Black Caviar make up the 2011 Newmarket Handicap final field for this Saturday’s Flemington feature after acceptances for all the Super Saturday of Racing events were released this morning.

The $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) is shaping up as one of the most exciting in years with sprint queen Black Caviar out to extend her freakish succession of wins to 10 on Saturday.

If successful, Black Caviar will make Australian horse racing history as the first runner to score all 10 of their opening career starts on metropolitan tracks.

Black Caviar has opened odds-on in the betting markets at Luxbet currently paying $1.25 to become the Newmarket Handicap winner in 2011.

The shortest-priced Newmarket Handicap winner in history was Bernborough who saluted as the $1.44 favourite in 1944.

After annihilating her rivals first-up with a stunning victory in the Group 1 Coolmore Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 19, Black Caviar will attempt to become a triple Group 1 winner in the Newmarket when she jumps from her good barrier eight draw with regular rider Luke Nolen aboard.

Allocated the top-weight of 58.5kg in the Newmarket this year, Black Caviar is also out to make history as the heaviest-weighted mare to win the event surpassing Maybe Mahal who carried 56.5kg to victory in 1978.

Moody will also be represented in the Newmarket Handicap by Hinchinbrook, rated a $26 chance of defeating his star stablemate through Luxbet.

One of the two 50kg lightweights in this year’s Newmarket, three-year-old Fastnet Rock colt Hinchinbrook is coming off a gallant third to Eagle Falls in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 26 and is set to start from barrier five on Saturday.

Oakleigh Plate winner and runner-up behind Wanted in the 2010 Newmarket Handicap, Eagle Falls returns to the track this year looking to go one better.

The David Hayes-trained Hussonet gelding has suffered a blow, however drawing the far outside barrier 12 and sits at $26 in the Newmarket odds at Luxbet.

Last year’s Newmarket Handicap fourth placegetter King Pulse is the only other running returning for a second year on Saturday, Michael Moroney’s four-year-old second-up after running seventh in the Lightning Stakes.

The Lightning was King Pulse’s first run since he was severely injured in the hail storm at Flemington that hit moments after the 2010 Newmarket Handicap.

The other 50kg lightweight lining up in the Newmarket on Saturday along with Hinchinbrook is Golden Slipper winning filly Crystal Lily who has come up trumps with barrier one.

At her only start to date this year, Crystal Lily resumed from a lengthy injury-enforced spell to run fifth behind Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes and as such is a $51 roughie in the Luxbet Newmarket Handicap betting.

Lightning Stakes runner-up Hay List is also one of the 11 rivals out to cause an unlikely upset in the 2011 Newmarket Handicap.

Having faced Black Caviar twice before for two defeats, Statue Of Liberty five-year-old Hay List has drawn ideally with barrier three and will advantage from a 3.5kg drop in weight from the Lightning for his third encounter with the world’s highest-rated sprinter.

Luxbet have Hay List as the $13 second favourite in the Newmarket Handicap odds.

The other notable opponent Black Caviar will face in the Newmarket field on Saturday is $16 third elect at Luxbet, Danny O’Brien’s dual Group 1 winning colt Star Witness drawn well in barrier two.

The 2011 Lexus Newmarket Handicap is scheduled to run as Flemington Race 6 on Saturday due to jump at 2:35pm (AEDST).
