2022 Golden Slipper Next for Magic Night Stakes Winner She’s Extreme

Anthony Cummings is in with a livewire chance in Saturday week’s Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper (1200m) with She’s Extreme impressive on a wet Rosehill track to win the 2022 Magic Night Stakes for the punters.

She was easing $3.50 favourite on track but proved too good for her rivals, Tommy Berry presenting the nicely-bred daughter of Extreme Choice at the right time off a lovely run throughout parked behind the speed in the Group 3 $175,000 Magic Night Stakes (1200m).

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Celestial Spirit first-up was keen in the lead setting the pace, while Team Snowden’s Winnertakesitall and Godolphin’s Lonhro filly Magic were also up on the speed doing plenty of work.

They all came wide around the turn well off the fence, Winnertakesitall getting out to a narrow lead with plenty from the back closing well.

Coming down the outside was She’s Extreme, Berry winding up inside the final furlong before letting down hard on the top elect who moved up to take the lead 150m out from the line.

There was a line across but it was Cummings’ filly who finished best with one and a half lengths spare on the line with Magic Carpet ($11) second home but well beaten.

In third rounding out the trifecta was the Mark Newnham-trained Swift Sweet ($6.50).

“I suppose she has had that practice now and what she was losing in experience at those first couple of runs she has now got under her own belt. That showed when it got tough and she is just a high quality filly,” Cummings told Sky Thoroughbred Central post-win.

“It was a different sort of wet track today and the fact she was wide again, and the wide barrier has beaten her twice so far, even money was probably a bit of unders but she got to something like the right price and the punters went again.”

Five fillies have completed the Magic Night Stakes – Golden Slipper double throughout history: Toy Show (1975), Dark Eclipse (1980), Bounding Away (1986), Bint Marscay (1993) and Kiamichi (2019).

“A month ago, I didn’t think that that would suit (backing up into the Golden Slipper),” Cummings said.

“But she has surprised me every time with the way she has bounced back from each run. After her last run, I had given up hope of being in the Slipper at all but she came back and talked me into going today and I’m expecting she will do exactly the same (this week).

“She will bounce back and she will be ready to go again by Tuesday.”

A decision on who will ride She’s Extreme in the Golden Slipper is still to be made, with Berry himself uncertain on what two-year-old he will partner.

“Not sure now. I thought I had my ride but she was very impressive today. This track is very heavy. I can’t see it drying out too much towards next week, especially with a bit of rain coming,” he said.

“She has a nice bit of timing about her. I think Anthony would be pretty happy. I trialled her first trial and really liked her. Then after I trialled her a second time around, I said to Anthony, ‘I think she might be close to looking for the paddock’.

“He said ‘You just leave it up to me’ so I didn’t ride her in her first couple of starts. I said ‘so can I ride her now?’ He said yeah not a problem. Full credit to Anthony, he’s done a great job with the filly.”

All-in 2022 Golden Slipper odds through Ladbrokes.com.au on She’s Extreme to be the next on the quick back-up have firmed into $10 and are available in full here.
