2018 Super Saturday: Flemington Best Bets

Super Saturday 2018 takes place in Melbourne this afternoon and below are the Races.com.au team’s exclusive Flemington Best Bets to help you get the most bang for your betting buck in the last of the Victorian autumn feature races.

Catchy

There’s plenty to get excited about on the Super Saturday of Racing card including the two Group 1 highlights – the Group 1 $1.25 million Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and the Group 1 $1.5 million Australian Cup (2000m) running as races six and eight respectively.

2018 Newmarket Handicap betting is wide open and the three-year-old Merchant Navy is on the drift as the punters’ pick at Ladbrokes.com.au.

In the 2018 Australian Cup odds Gailo Chop for last year’s winning trainer Darren Weir is the clear favourite, but he is also easing and there are four other single-figure hopes in the 12 starter field making for an open race.

There is value to be had right across Flemington race card today at Ladbrokes.com.au so check out our Super Saturday Best Bets to get you there!

In The Big One (Race 8) – 2018 Australian Cup

#11 Single Gaze To Win ($8)

There is so much to like about Nick Olive’s honest mare who is full of class and deserving of another Group 1 to add the 2016 Vinery Stud Stakes she took out as a filly. That was over this 2000m distance and she’s had the gun lead-up. Will be hitting peak fitness third-up after the back-to-back seconds at Caulfield behind fellow rivals today Hartnell in the CF Orr and Gailo Chop in the Peter Young. It’s been a while since a mare took this race out, Makybe Diva (2005) the last, but happy to say Single Gaze can be the next at a good price

Best Roughie To Win (Race 6) – 2018 Newmarket Handicap

#15 Catchy ($11)

The Newmarket Handicap has been a roughie’s race the past two years with wins by The Quarterback ($21 in 2016) and Redkirk Warrior ($31 in 2017). This year it’s wide open, but at double-figures there is lots to like about former Blue Diamond winning filly Catchy. She’s out to be the first of her kind since Alinghi (2005) to win and looks incredibly well-weighted getting in on just 50kg. She will fly with those kilos and is undefeated second-up (2:2-0-0). She comes off a lead-up run in the Oakleigh Plate, which has produced two of the past four Newmarket winners, and her sixth in that was far better than it looks on paper. It was a very good run from the Lindsay Park-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock and she will be better getting out to 1200m (4:2-0-0). Also forgivable was her unplaced Coolmore Stud Stakes run at this track / distance behind today’s favourite Merchant Navy in the spring when at the end of her prep. She’s got the upside and weight advantage this time around and winning form down the Flemington Straight Six last prep in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes, where Booker ran third, carrying 56kg.

Best Market Mover (Race 4) – 2018 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes

#6 Tin Hat ($7.50 into $4.80)

A nice field of two-year-olds take to the track in Race 4 for the Group 2 VRC Sires’ this afternoon and in a typically open juvenile’s affair there are five under $10 for the win. The firming favourite and market mover is now Tin Hat and he looks a very nice chance to salute for the favourite backers. Drawn a treat in gate two with Damian Lane coming on the Godolphin youngster for the first time, this Helmet colt looks for back-to-back wins after breaking his maiden status at Ballarat over the 1200m on February 25. Carried 58kg in that and looks better weighted at set weights. Should appreciate the step-up to 1400m and has upside.
