2018 Tasmanian Derby Field: Seven Final Acceptors

Just seven three-year-old stayers make up the official Tasmanian Derby 2018 field for one of the two feature races at Hobart Racecourse this Friday evening in the Apple Isle.

Civil Disobedience

Scheduled to run as Race 6 at 6:54pm (AEDT), this summer’s Listed $150,000 Schweppes Tasmanian Derby (2200m) line-up features a small but class field of up-and-comers.

Heading the field and drawn the inside alley with barrier one is the Darren Weir-trained Civil Disobedience, a Kiwi-bred son of Raise The Flag making his Hobart debut.

Travelling down from Victoria, the class colt enjoyed successive summer wins at Mornington and Flemington respectively over 2000m before a last start third at the same distance on January 20.

In that Flemington run Civil Disobedience carted a hefty 60kg with John Allen, who retains the ride for Friday night, in the saddle.

The galloper should relish coming back to set weights in the Tasmanian Derby getting in on 57kg and also looks set to step-up to the 2200m distance.

Leading Victorian horseman Weir has also accepted for stablemate Wolfendale in gate three with Group 1 winning hoop Dean Yendall to ride.

Yendall was aboard the Astronomer Royal gelding last time out at the Hobart track on January 28 when Wolfendale enjoyed a half-length victory in the Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m).

That was the horse’s second win on the trot following a narrow Cranbourne win in the mud on January 12 and put him in line to do the Hobart Guineas – Tasmanian Derby double.

The other best out of the Hobart Guineas were runner-up Double You Tee and third placed Pennstock who both also back-up in the Tasmanian Derby field under the lights on Friday.

John Blacker prepares well-bred Written Tycoon colt Double You Tee who is out to turn the tables on his last start conqueror after his second runners-up position on the trot.

Prior to the Hobart Guineas, the consistent bay was narrowly beaten finishing second to Overplay in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) as a double-figure roughie.

He now boasts the two seconds from three runs at Hobart and getting out over the 2200m with regular rider Jason Maskiell aboard again, could be the one to beat.

Pennstock meanwhile has gun jockey Craig Newitt in the saddle again after the pair combined for the Hobart Guineas third.

That was a much improved run from the Barry Campbell-trained Hinchinbrook gelding Pennstock whose lead-up run in the Tasmanian Guineas produced the disappointing 10th when failing to let down on the Soft-rated track.

David Miller’s Tasmanian Guineas winner Overplay meanwhile is also back, the Written Tycoon colt looking to improve on his fourth place effort in the Hobart Guineas when stepped out over further than a mile for the first time.

Perennial placegetter Gee Gees Saint Nik and Damien Oliver’s mount Kugleblitz, coming off a lead-up win at Werribee, round out the field.
