Foxplay Heads 2017 Tristarc Stakes Field & Betting

Early money in Tristarc Stakes 2017 betting on Caulfield Cup Day this weekend favours the Chris Waller-trained Sydney visitor Foxplay to take out the mares’ feature.

A capacity field of 16, plus two emergencies, has been accepted for Caulfield Race 9 at 5:10pm (AEDT) on Saturday when the Group 2 $200,000 Schweppes Tristarc Stakes (1400m) runs as the penultimate event of Caulfield Cup Day 2017.

The race is named in honour of the 1985 Caulfield Cup winning mare Tristarc and features a typically open field of runners.

Four are currently under double-figures in the latest Tristarc Stakes odds at [ladborkes] including the narrow $4.80 favourite Foxplay from the Sydney stables Waller.

The Winx stablemate is drawn to get a gun run from barrier four with Kerrin McEvoy booked to partner the four-year-old daughter of Foxwedge fourth-up.

Foxplay is best known for her win, with McEvoy in the saddle, on April 8 at Randwick in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

Her spring campaign included back-to-back placings behind Winx in the Warwick Stakes (2nd) and George Main Stakes (3rd) before a brave last start fourth to Happy Clapper when only three lengths beaten in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).

She comes up from 54.5kg to 58.5kg on the weekend, but is down in grade and back against her own kind in her first Melbourne run since her fourth to Global Glamour in last year’s Thousand Guineas as a three-year-old.

Occupying the second line of Tristarc Stakes betting this weekend at $5.50 for the win is Silent Sedition who suffered an early blow drawing the far outside alley.

The Andrew Noblet-trained daughter of War Chant will jump from barrier 16 of 16 on Saturday looking to improve on the close fifth when only 1.7 lengths off the winner Keen Array down the Flemington straight in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) on October 7.

That was her first run since fourth, when beaten by even less, to Foxplay in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

Silent Sedition may have the horror gate in the Tristarc Stakes barrier draw, but she is a Group 1 winning in Melbourne having saluted in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in late March.

She also boasts an excellent Caulfield track record (5-1-3-1) and returns to the course for the first time since her victory in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) back on Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Day in late February.

Also drawn wide one inside of Silent Sedition is $7.50 shot Ravi, the in-form Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Redoute’s Choice mare to be ridden by Hugh Bowman.

First-up in Sydney she took out the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) by two lengths before finishing third in a blanket trifecta only a quarter-length beaten by Savanna Amour at Caulfield on September 23 in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m).

She has been freshened-up since and returns ready to fire on the weekend.

The aforementioned Thousand Guineas winner from 2016, Global Glamour, rounds out the single-figure Tristarc Stakes hopes this year at $8.50.

Drawn third from the outside, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained daughter of Star Witness is a dual Group 1 winner and returns to racing having last been seen finishing runner-up to Derryn in the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) on April 8.

She has trialled twice since in Sydney ready to make her four-year-old debut on Saturday returning to Caulfield where she backed-up for a Flight Stakes success to win the Thousand Guineas as a filly.
