The three-year-old sprinters face off at Royal Randwick in Saturday’s 2017 Roman Consul Stakes, betting tips and the updated odds for the Spring Champion Stakes Day support act detailed below.

This season’s Group 2 $300,000 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) has drawn a diminutive starting line-up of just eight hopefuls set to do battle in Randwick Race 6 at 3:35pm (AEDT).

Currently five of those are under $10 in the Roman Consul Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, which have the undefeated Viridine ($3.10) as the favourite in barrier two.

The James Cummings-trained Poet’s Voice colt has been blessed with favourable gates throughout his career and gets that again on Saturday chasing win number four.

Last time out ventured into black-type company for the first time at the Randwick track and saluted without a worry in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m).

Comes back from 57kg to 56.5kg at set weights for Saturday’s Group 2 and looks a true professional who will position himself well again chasing his second win from as many goes over the 1200m.

The other best in Roman Consul Stakes betting this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival are the Gary Portelli-trained Heritage Stakes runner-up Single Bullet ($4.20) out to turn the tables, the progressive Chauffeur ($5.50) for Team Hawkes and the other Godolphin galloper in the mix Beau Geste ($7).

#3 Viridine ($3.10)

Deserving favourite who can keep his flawless record intact with another dream run from barrier two. Won the Heritage Stakes first-up by over a length and should be fitter second-up for the run. Is already proven at 1200m so the extra 100m is a non-issue, Brenton Avdulla retains the ride and the set weights conditions of this work to his advantage in another plus.

#5 Beau Geste ($7)

Good price on offer for this genuine Each Way chance drawn in barrier five with Kerrin McEvoy aboard. Cummings can train the quinella with this Street Cry colt looking to finish in the money behind his better-fancied stablemate. Comes off a different lead-up having saluted over 1300m at Rosehill under 58kg. Right back in the weights and drops 100m so will be flying. Improving each time out and deserves a shot in this grade.

#1 Chauffeur ($5.50)

Back-to-back sixths in the lead-up from this quality colt who has form around some of the best of this crop. Last start was in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) and this is much easier. Trapeze Artist was a runaway winner that day, so the margin was better than it reads. Back in grade and distance. Can run in the money.
