Russian Revolution Ready for McEwen Stakes 2017

Peter & Paul Snowden’s Group 1 winning sprinter Russian Revolution has put in the ideal piece of work for hoop Kerrin McEvoy ahead of a return to racing in the 2017 McEwen Stakes in Melbourne this weekend.

The four-year-old Snitzel stallion looked fit and ready to fire with a Moonee Valley gallop on Tuesday morning that has further brought him on for his run at the track in Saturday’s Group 2 Mitty’s McEwen Stakes (1000m).

“He’s come back pretty good. He’s had two solid trials in Sydney,” co-trainer Paul Snowden told Racing Victoria on Tuesday.

“He was here this morning for a look around.

“He’s slotted in great and handled the Valley extremely well.

“He is [ready to win]. He’s done plenty of work, that work’s done.

“Today was just topping off for that.”

Russian Revolution is battling for favouritism in markets for the weight-for-age sprint with Toby Edmonds’ gun filly Houtzen who also races first-up on Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes Day

To date Team Snowden’s short-distance specialist has enjoyed five wins from eight starts, the fresh flyer having posted four on the trot to start his career.

He is yet to race at Moonee Valley but does having winning form the Melbourne way having taken out last year’s Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield first-up.

“He was here last year,” Snowden said.

“He went to Brisbane in the winter, and now he’s back again.

“He’s well-travelled.”

From there he spelled and returned with another gun run fresh winning Randwick’s Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m).

That spring performance saw him south bound again and Russian Revolution was far from disgraced in his toughest test as a three-year-old when only two lengths back fourth down the famous Flemington straight behind Flying Artie in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Victoria Derby Day.

The youngster retained his undefeated first-up record this autumn winning the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) in a tight finish with stablemate Redzel on a Heavy (10) Rosehill track on March 18.

A subsequent sixth to superstar Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, while Russian Revolution was last seen running fourth to the aforementioned fellow Snowden-trained Redzel in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) in Brisbane on May 13.

“He’s competed at a high level for his past four-five starts now, at Group 1 level,” Snowden added.

“He’s a pretty solid performer at that level and we’re expecting a good show on Saturday.”
