2024 Silver Slipper Winner Straight Charges Up Golden Slipper Betting Markets

It is off to the coveted Golden Slipper in a month’s time for the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained duo of Straight Charge and Espionage after the duo ran one-two in the Silver Slipper Stakes 2024 results at Rosehill on Saturday.

Top honours went to the talented natural young galloper Straight Charge ($2.45F) who fought off Espionage ($2.80) for the lead to go all-the-way and salute for the punters in this year’s Group 2 $300,000 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m).

The progressive Written By colt put the writing on the wall for his upcoming assignment in the Group 1 $4.92 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) back at the track on March 23.

“Excellent. He is a very talented colt,” Adrian Bott told Sky Thoroughbred Central post-win.

“I was heartbroken we didn’t get to see him go up to the Magic Millions, he’s such a great talent. But he’s back here today to showcase it and it was a very impressive win.

“He has been a natural two-year-old all the way through, from the minute we did anything with him he has shown that natural brilliance. That great early speed and good, sustained speed.

“He has been very impressive today and that’s what we have seen all the way through.

“He took the running up early and it was very difficult because he had a good colt (stablemate Espionage) chasing him.

“I think he enjoyed the conditions and there is still a bit of improvement to come.”

The Silver Slipper winner was ridden to victory by Tim Clark who was also aboard for Straight Charge’s lead-up win at Randwick when saluting by 3.62 lengths back in December.

Today was his first Group victory with his other career start being a second to Espionage on debut in the Group 3 Breeder’s Plate (1000m).

Having his first run since then in the Silver Slipper, nicely-bred Zoustar colt Espionage fought jockey Nash Rawiller a little over racing in second throughout.

He stuck to the task on the straight continuing to chase before making up late ground over the final 50m to bring the margin back to a length between them on the line.

“He was excellent. He hasn’t raced since the Breeders’ (Plate) and ultimately, that may have been the difference,” Bott said of the Silver Slipper runner-up.

“That extra grounding and the campaign that Straight Charge had in between, that may have been the difference today.

“I do think the ground was also slightly against Espionage.

“He’s got a lot of natural brilliance and he may not have been able to pick his feet up initially at the top of the straight. Back on top of the ground I think we’ll see further improvement.”

In third to round out the trifecta was the Ciaron Maher-trained Rubick filly Erno’s Cube ($7) who was good again off her fourth in January’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast.

Co-trainer Gai Waterhouse holds the record of most Golden Slipper wins with seven and looks to have plenty of livewire chances to make it eight in 2024.

Straight Charge is now out to complete the Silver Slipper – Golden Slipper double last completed by the fellow Waterhouse/Bott champion Farnan in 2020

Her latest was with Farnan back in 2020 in partnership with Bott.

Farnan was also the last two-year-old to complete the Silver Slipper Stakes – Golden Slipper double that Straight Charge vies for this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Bott confirmed plans for both Straight Charge and Espionage to have another run between now and the Golden Slipper in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on March 9.

“Both intend to go to the Todman, that’s the path we have set for them,” he said.

“That will have them fit, hard and ready for the Golden Slipper so every intention we see them both again.”

All-in 2024 Golden Slipper odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have firmed on Straight Charge following his Silver Slipper success right in from around 20/1 to $9 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

Espionage is close behind at $11 in the pre-field Golden Slipper Stakes betting markets which remain led by Waterhouse & Bott’s Magic Millions Classic winning Justify colt Storm Boy ($3) and can be found in full by clicking here.
