Ciaron Maher & David Eustace’s dual Group 3 winning filly Coolangatta is the short-priced favourite for Saturday’s 2022 Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast despite a wide barrier 13 draw.

A capacity field of juveniles faces off in this season’s $2 million The Star Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) as part of the weekend’s bumper Magic Millions Race Day.
At a nearing odds-on quote of $2.05 through Ladbrokes.com.au in the updated Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting markets is undefeated Written Tycoon filly Coolangatta to be ridden by James McDonald.
The favourite drew gate 13 in Tuesday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic barrier draw, but could come into barrier 10 should all emergencies fail to gain a start.
After winning her debut in runaway fashion taking out Randwick’s Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) by over three lengths last October, Coolangatta raced again on Boxing Day at Doomben.
She was equally impressive there saluting by two lengths in the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) and looks the one to beat in Saturday’s feature race.
Coolangatta is out to become the first two-year-old to complete the B.J. McLachlan Stakes – Magic Millions 2YO Classic double since Unencumbered (2013).
With 24 of the past 29 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winners having come off a lead-up victory and the fillies having had plenty of recent success, Coolangatta ticks plenty of boxes ahead of her acid test.
Maher and Eustace meanwhile chase their second victory in three years having won back in 2020 with the filly Away Game who scored a notable upset at 40/1.
The only other runner under double-figures in the latest Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds at $6 is Russian Conquest for Peter & Paul Snowden.
The stable won the race with Capitalist back in 2016 and look in with a genuine chance in 2022 with Russian Conquest, another undefeated filly like Coolangatta.
The daughter of Russan Revolution won the Max Lees Classic at Newcastle over 900m on debut in mid-November and won again on December 26 at Randwick by three lengths over 1100m.
Kerrin McEvoy, who won the race aboard the filly Exhilarates for Godolphin in 2019, comes aboard Russian Conquest for the first time on Saturday from barrier four.
Team Snowden have a total of three final acceptors in this year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic field with Russian Conquest joined by Revolution Conquest joined by Miss Hellfire in the official line-up, while Revolutionary Miss looks unlikely to gain a run as the third emergency.
Miss Hellfire, a filly by Hellbent, pays $11 in the latest markets after a last start victory at the Gold Coast track from January 8.
Prior to that she was eye-catching on debut in mid-December when narrowly beaten running second to Soaring Ambition in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic over 1100m.
The Wyong Magic Millions Classic winner Soaring Ambition also backs-up in Saturday’s $2 million event for trainer Annabel Neasham, the Not A Single Doubt filly also paying $11 to return to winning form after a second at Doomben on New Year’s Day over the 1200m distance.
Other notable Magic Millions 2YO Classic hopefuls this summer include Supido colt Stupendo for Danny O’Brien, the well-tried Mishani Warrior having his sixth career start and the consistent local Michael Costa-trained The Mission filly Perfect Mission.
