Chris Waller claimed back-to-back wina at Royal Randwick on Saturday after four-year old mare Unforgotten claimed victory in the $250,000 Chelmsford Stakes (1100m).
Caught behind two runners late, things looked a little uncertain for the solo Group 1 winner during the final furlong, but with Hugh Bowman in the saddle, it was only a matter of time before Unforgotten kicked into gear.
It was yet another eye-catching run from another prodigy of the Waller stable, one that has seen Unforgotten firm from $12 into $6 with Ladbrokes ahead of The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick later this month.
Saturday’s win was a prime example of just how deadly Unforgotten’s turn of foot can be, but it helps when you have a calm and patient jockey in the saddle like Bowman.
“I had the horse taking places I wouldn’t go, but she’s pretty smart and she put the writing on the wall when she won the ATC Oaks here in the Autumn, the world’s her oyster” Bowman told Racing.com.
“I wouldn’t imagine she’ll be beating Winx anytime soon, but there’s plenty of races out there for her”.
Winx is the horse every trainer wishes to avoid in the Spring, but Waller recognizes the potential his prized four-year old has going forward.
“She’s very special, she showed that in the Autumn with her win in the Oaks.” Waller said after the race.
“Looked like she needed a bit of luck but to have acceleration over the mile shows she’s not just a 2000m horse”
Waller toyed with the idea of the Caulfield Cup in other post-race interviews, but wouldn’t confirm whether or not Unforgotten would participate.
With Bowman showing a cunning knack to move his horse from the outside to the inside late in the race, Unforgotten figures to remain a Group 1 favourite for the rest of 2018.
She currently sits on the second line of betting at $11.00 ahead of October’s $5 million race.
