After failing to find a spot at stud, one million dollar earning sprinter Lord Of The Sky could be seen racing in the world’s richest turf race with trainer Robbie Laing chasing a slot in the 2017 The Everest field.
Danerich six-year-old Lord Of The Sky may be Group 1 placed with over $1 million in prize money amassed over his 25-start career, but connections couldn’t find a buyer for the stallion prospect despite a close call with Harry Mitchell from Yarraman Park Stud in Scone.
“It was nearly over the line. Harry loved the horse, but in the finish he didn’t think his dam line was deep enough,” Laing explained to the Herald Sun this week.
“There were a couple of small studs happy to stand him for the owners, but they decided they wanted to race him again.
“There’s horses coming out here from England with Group 2 form going to stud and he’s got Group 1 Australian sprint form. I don’t get it.”
Instead he has returned to work at Laing’s Victorian stables with a spring campaign now pending after a Cranbourne trial next week.
“He’s done a lot of work. His tendon has been scanned and it’s strong,” Laing said.
Early on Laing plans to run Lord Of The Sky in Melbourne, but the pie-in-the-sky dream is to find a connection willing to pay $600,000 to have a slot in the $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Randwick Racecourse on October 14.
“He’s finished second to Chautauqua, the favourite for the race, at the track and distance, and he’s also finished alongside him in a Newmarket [when fourth in the 2015 Newmarket Handicap],” Laing said.
Lord Of The Sky, who was runner-up to current favourite in The Everest betting at Ladbrokes.com.au Chautauqua in the 2015 TJ Smith Stakes, was last seen finishing under two lengths back fifth behind Miss Rose De Lago at Caulfield on August 13 in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) where he injured his tendon.
That followed his July 30 victory in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m), his win in which broke a notable drought going back to his 2014 Sir John Monash Stakes victory.
This season’s $150,000 Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) is scheduled for Caulfield on July 15 and Laing has Lord Of The Sky set to contest the event for the fourth year on the trot.
A fortnight later the horse is expected to run second-up in the Bletchingly Stakes, a race he has also contested for the past three seasons on the trot.
