Doomben 10,000 Field 2017: Snowden Duo Draw Well

The two Peter & Paul Snowden-trained sprinters in the 2017 Doomben 10,000 field in Brisbane on Saturday have come up trumps in the barriers with the favourite Russian Revolution and stablemate Redzel drawn in gates five and three respectively.

A final field of 15 weight-for-age gallopers will face off in the opening elite level of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival this weekend when the $700,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) runs as Doomben Race 7 at 4:04pm (AEST).

Leading the latest Doomben 10,000 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au out to be the first three-year-old winner of the race, now run over 1200m for the first time in 70 years, since Epaulette (2013) is Russian Revolution.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden won the race with Epaulette that year celebrating his second Doomben 10,000 success having earlier prepared the mare Beaded for her 2011 success.

This year Snowden, who now trains in partnership with his son Paul, has two genuine chances to make it three wins with Russian Revolution and Redzel.

Snitzel colt Russian Revolution enjoyed a Group 1 win first-up in March taking out The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill before his credible sixth to superstar Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

A subsequent winning Randwick trial on April 28 has the youngster ready to fire in the Doomben 10,000 where he jumps from barrier five.

The Galaxy runner-up Redzel meanwhile is a four-year-old son of Snitzel who was last seen winning the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on April 15.

There are two other last start winners in this year’s Doomben 10,000 field with the reigning champion Music Magnate and the Lindsay Park-trained Derryn.

Bjorn Baker saddles up the defending Doomben 10,000 winner Music Magnate who is out to go back-to-back in the race for the first time since Apache Cat (2008-09).

Last winter the Written Tycoon gelding became the third horse in six years to take out the race from barrier seven and he has come up trumps with the same gate this season with Jeff Lloyd aboard for the ride.

Lloyd rode the now five-year-old to victory last time out on April 29 at Eagle Farm in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m), Music Magnate improving on his earlier 12th to Russian Revolution in The Galaxy.

Reigning Doomben 10,000 winner Music Magnate is out to become the third horse in as many years to take out the race from barrier 7

Derryn is another gun three-year-old taking on the older horses in the race this weekend, the well-bred Hinchinbrook colt last seen beating home dual Group 1 winning filly Global Glamour in the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) at Randwick on April 8.

Other key contenders including Matthew Dale’s TJ Smith Stakes third placegetter Fell Swoop who suffered an early blow drawing barrier 14, the Chris Waller-trained Hall Mark Stakes runner-up to Redzel Counterattack in gate two and his rails-drawn stablemate Japonisme chasing his first win since the 2016 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint.
