Believe Leads 2016 SA Fillies Classic Field

Anthony Cummings’ Group 1 placed Sydney raider Believe is the top-rated acceptor for the SA Fillies Classic 2016 field at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide this weekend.

Set to run as Morphettville Race 3 at 1:45pm (local) on The Goodwood Day bill, this year’s $120,000 Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) field features a capacity 16 starters plus four emergencies.

Wearing the number one saddlecloth but drawn the second outside barrier (19 into 15) is Fastnet Rock filly Believe who has South Australian hoop Dom Tourneur booked to partner.

Two back she caught the eye running a close third when under a length off the winner in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) at Randwick.

She wasn’t quite as explosive dropping back in distance last start for her first Morphettville run however, Believe crossing just under three lengths away sixth to Abbey Marie in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m).

The step back up in distance is set to suit on Saturday though making Believe a livewire hope if she can overcome the wide alley.

Another ATC Oaks graduate running in the SA Fillies Classic field on the weekend is the fifth-placed Chabaud prepared by Caulfield’s Robert Smerdon.

She backed up out of the Oaks running fourth over 2000m at Flemington beaten only 1.45 lengths and should also be better getting out over more metres in the Group 3 on The Goodwood Day.

As for the fillies coming off a Schweppes Oaks run along with Believe is the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Beluga Blue who crossed 3.2 lengths back for seventh in the Group at the Morphettville track a fortnight ago.

That was a notable improvement on the locally-trained chestnut’s 14th to Silent Sedition, a subsequent second in the Schweppes Oaks, in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) in April.

Despite the size of the field just one filly comes off a last-start win with the Michael Moroney-trained daughter of Savabeel Vandancer having saluted over 2100m at Sandown-Lakeside on April 20 ahead of her Black-Type debut at start number seven.

Other notable SA Fillies Classic hopes include the Richard Laming-trained Group 1 performer Ashlee Marie, Danny O’Brien’s in-form She’s Got Speed drawn well in barrier two for jockey James Winks and the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained daughter of Redoute’s Choice Concubine who comes off a fifth to subsequent SA Derby winner Howard Be Thy Name in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2020m) from April 30.
