South Australian Fillies Classic

The SA Fillies Classic is a Group 3 race run at Morphettville Racecourse on The Goodwood Day in May each year during the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.

The South Australian Fillies Classic is a Group 3 race held annually at Adelaide’s Morphettville Racecourse in late May on The Goodwood Day.

A staying showdown run over 2500m for three-year-old fillies at set weights, the SA Fillies Classic field has a capacity of 16 starters and the race offers a total of $175,000 in prize money. Contending fillies looking to step-up in distance and test their staying abilities may have come via the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) a fortnight before. In 2017 Ana Royale came off a Group 1 Australasian Oaks third for her SA Fillies Classic win as the favourite.

Fillies in the SA Fillies Classic field could also be on a quick seven day turnaround coming off a run against the boys the week before in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) at the same track and distance.

The 2018 SA Fillies Classic runs on Saturday May 19, 2018

2018 South Australian Fillies Classic Field

The South Australian Fillies Classic field attracts the season’s top three-year-old staying fillies, primarily from local stables in Adelaide. A number of interstate fillies that were over for the Australasian Oaks may stay on for a shot at the race before heading to Brisbane the following month for the Group1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm.

The official 2018 SA Fillies Classic Field & Barriers are released by the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) on the Wednesday of race week.

The South Australian Fillies Classic 2018 Final Field drew a full 16 starters plus an emergency who gets a run with the early scratching of Wild Sea. The two best fancied fillies in the mix battling for top spot in betting are Mick Price’s ATC Oaks – Schweppes Oaks third placegetter Miss Admiration and the Darren Weir-trained Schweppes Oaks fourth placed Pleasuring.

South Australian Fillies Classic History

The first South Australian Fillies Classic was run in 1951 when Gay Comedy claimed victory and was known as the South Australian Oaks. It started out as a Principal race run over 10 furlongs and remained the same up until 1973 when the race distance was converted to 2000m. Less than a decade later the race gained Group 1 status in 1980 and for one year in 1985 the South Australian Oaks was not held. The following year in 1986 the length increased dramatically to 2400m making the South Australian Oaks a genuine staying test for the contending horses. Then in 1995 the distance was again increased to 2500m before the race was demoted to a Group 2 event in 2005. A couple of years later the status of the race was again downgraded to its current Group 3 status. In 2009 the race was renamed the South Australian Fillies Classic. In 2010 the race was run over 2400m, and as of 2012 it was run over 2500m.
