Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Seventeen two-year-old fillies make up the Calaway Gal Stakes 2015 nominations for Doomben Racecourse in one of this weekend’s Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic lead-up races.
While last year’s winning filly Flamenco failed to make an impression in the lucrative $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast next run when 15th of 16 runners behind Le Chef, the form could stack up on January 9 this summer.
Ten of the 17 fillies entered for Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1050m) have previous race experience including the Tony Gollan-trained Zelady’s Night Out.
A promising daughter of Myboycharlie she won by a tidy four and a half lengths over the same track and distance on debut on November 14 and now occupies the second line of futures Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting paying $7 through Ladbrokes.com.au in markets led by Capitalist ($4).
She is also the sole Calaway Gal Stakes nominee for Brisbane’s premier trainer Gollan this season.
Another winner on debut and early fancy for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic next month is the Steven O’dea-trained The Last Kiss paying $10 for the Gold Coast feature.
She had her first run at Doomben over 1100m on November 21 winning by a narrow margin with Paul Hammersley in the saddle and so drops back in distance if accepted for this weekend’s feature.
Runner-up in the same race was Sunshine Coast-trained Real Saga filly Our Cinderella who is also in the mix for the Calaway Gal Stakes.
She debuted at Toowoomba running third behind Two Shoes on November 7 before her brave second last time out with apprentice Beau Appo aboard who is likely to retain the ride as she steps up to black-type company for the first time.
Along with Zelady’s Night Out and The Last Kiss there are two other hopeful fillies with winning form already.
Gold Coast horseman John Smerdon prepares Sidereus filly Starante who won at home over 900m on November 21 and so is up in distance second-up, while the Richie Stephenson-trained daughter of Red Element Hot Lipstick broke her maiden status at home at Toowoomba three runs in last weekend over 870m.
Other fillies in the nominations who have a run on their record include the Brent Stanley-trained Balancing Act who ran second at the track last Friday, How Big’s The Hole, River Racer and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Sydney visitor Serena’s Pride.
