2015 Queensland Guineas Nominations Feature Miss Cover Girl

While Gai Waterhouse has ruled out another spring run for her recent Fred Best Classic winning filly Najoom, runner-up in that race Miss Cover Girl is one of the headline Queensland Guineas 2015 nominations taken for this weekend in Brisbane.

A notable support race on the Stradbroke Handicap Day line-up at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday, this year’s $400,000 Group 2 Sky Racing Queensland Guineas (1600m) attracted a bumper 24 early entries.

One of the top early chances in the set weights mile showdown, which has a field limit of 16 starters plus five emergencies, is the local Kelly Schweida-trained Monashee Mountain filly Miss Cover Girl.

Winner of the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) in the wet at Randwick in early April, she improved on a fifth in the Listed Mick Dittman Stakes (1200m) when returning to Brisbane at the start of May before her second to Najoom in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben on May 23.

There are eight fillies nominated to take on the colts and geldings in the Queensland Guineas this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Other notable female three-year-olds who could accept when the final field is out on Wednesday morning include the Noel Doyle-trained Aimee from the Gold Coast, last start Sunshine Coast winning Stratum filly Steps To Stardom, Group 1 runner-up in Melbourne Traveston Girl out to improve on a Fred Best ninth last start, Tree Of Jesse who won in the mud at Randwick last start and Whatalovelyday.

Jon Walk’s Brisbane-based daughter of Domesday Whatalovelyday ran third to Bohemian Lily in the Group 2 The Roses (2020m) two back before running a disappointing 10th when fading towards the end of the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) over the weekend in her distance test.

As for the Queensland Guineas nominated boys there’s plenty of talent including third past the post in the Fred Best last start, the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Fastnet Rock colt Awesome Rock.

Some of the other noteworthy Queensland Guineas nominees include Jason Coyle’s last start Randwick winner over 1300m Final Decision, the Chris Waller-trained Not A Single Doubt colt Good Project, Peter Moody’s Ulmann and Murt The Flirt.

Sebring colt Ulmann has excellent form to follow heading into Saturday, the Melbourne visitor last seen running second to Winx in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) on May 16.

That form stacked up last Saturday with Waller’s filly Winx backing up to take out the Queensland Oaks in effortless fashion, Ulmann next to try and frank the form coming out of the Sunshine Coast Guineas.

Murt The Flirt meanwhile also comes off a second place finish, the Brendan McCarthy-trained gelding runner-up behind Mashan by a nose over 1350m at Ipswich on May 27 before his bet black type test if accepted into the Queensland Guineas field.
