The Queensland Guineas is a mile feature for three-year-olds run during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
The Group 2 Queensland Guineas is a 1600m event for all three year old horses and is worth $350,000 in prize money.
Previously held at Eagle Farm Racecourse in early June, the event was cancelled in 2020 due COVID-19 and then moved to its own feature race day in early May for 2021 and late April in 2022.
The mile event is a set weights race and now serves as a potential lead-up into the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
Queensland Guineas Day now features two Group 2 events with the other feature on the card being the Group 2 Victory Stakes for Stradbroke Handicap types.
The Queensland Guineas field attracts a line-up of the season’s best three-year-old middle distance gallopers coming off potential lead-up runs from the autumn in Sydney.
A number of times in recent years the Queensland Guineas has been held at Doomben Racecourse due to ongoing track issues at Eagle Farm.
The Queensland Guineas also now offers a ballot exemption to the winner into the $1.2 million Group 2 The Q22 (2200m) run at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
The form of the 2021 Queensland Guineas was franked with the winner Private Eye going on to dominate in the spring later that year including winning Sydney’s Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).
The 2022 Queensland Guineas form was franked with the runner-up Dark Destroyer winning the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate next start before a fourth in that year’s Queensland Derby and subsequent Group 1 Tarzino Stakes win in New Zealand that September.
The Queensland Guineas 2023 ran on Saturday April 29, 2023 at Eagle Farm Racecourse and was won in style by the Derby-bound favourite Kovalica ($2.40F).

Sticking with the favourite in the QLD Guineas on Saturday and have the ultra-consistent Chris Waller-trained Kovalica on top to return to winning form second-up. The progressive Ocean Park gelding won four on the trop over a strong spring / summer campaign including the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2100m) here at Eagle Farm as the odds-on elect. The winning streak came to an end for him first-up when third in a Randwick Listed race over an unsuitably short 1400m run on a Heavy (8) on April 8. He presents fitter for the run, gets out over a more suitable trip now, and the form of that lead-up race was franked last weekend with the winning filly Razeta running third in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas. Big chance.
The Queensland Guineas field draws a strong line-up of winter three-year-olds from both local Brisbane stables as well as interstate raiders chasing the riches on offer in the sunshine state. It is a race for gallopers heading towards a step-up in distance for the Group 1 Queensland Derby held, which it was previously on the same day as up until 2021.
The official Queensland Guineas 2023 field and barriers are announced by Racing Queensland the Wednesday of race week and will be published below.
The 2023 Queensland Guineas final field features a quality line-up of three-year-olds led in betting by Chris Waller’s Grand Prix Stakes winner from the summer Kovalica.

The Queensland Guineas 2023 nominations are out the Monday leading-up to race day.
First raced in 1896 and won by College Cap, the Queensland Guineas was originally an 8 Furlong Principal race until 1973 when it was changed to 1600m. Shortly after in 1979 the race was elevated to Group 3 status until 1988 when it was once again raised to Group Two status. The Queensland Guineas was not held from 1942 to 1945, 1983 or in 1996. The fastest winning time since 1988 was recorded by Sizzling in 2013 with 1 minute 24.3 seconds while the slowest time was 1 minute 43.8 seconds by Insecure in 1998.
In 2013 the Queensland Guineas moved race days, from Stradbroke Handicap Day to Queensland Oaks Day. The race distance was also changed from 1600m to 1400m. For 2017 the Queensland Guineas was contested over 1600m at Doomben Racecourse with the state of the Eagle Farm track deemed unsuitable for racing earlier in the carnival.
The 2020 Queensland Guineas was cancelled due to COVID-19 and moved forward on the winter carnival schedule from 2021.
