2014 Thousand Guineas Betting Tips

The feature race for fillies this weekend is the Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday, with betting tips set out below.

There are 11 fillies in the field for Saturday’s 2014 Thousand Guineas, running as Race 8 at 5:05pm (AEDST).

Nearly half of the field is offering single figure odds in the latest Thousand Guineas betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Lumosty at $4.20.

The Robert Smerdon-trained filly will start middle of the field from barrier seven with Craig Williams to ride, who won back in 2006.

Surprisingly a lot of money has been coming in for Lumosty, the market mover of the field shortening from $5.50 to $4.20, which can be attributed to her fantastic nine-length last start win. However it was only a maiden at Sale Racecourse, which punters should be wary of.

Her only other spring start was the Listed Cap D’Atibes Stakes (1100m), which she missed out on by just a short neck to Guineas rival Afleet Esprit.

Our 2014 Thousand Guineas Trifecta is #3 Afleet Esprit from #1 Bring Me The Maid and #8 Tahni Dancer
Also available at single figure odds in the Thousand Guineas betting is Go Indy Go and Afleet Esprit ($5), Bring Me The Maid ($7), and Amicus ($9.50).

With so many good betting prospects in the mix, below are our top tips for the Thousand Guineas 2014 so you get a better idea of who to back this Saturday.

1st

#3 Afleet Esprit ($5)

Punters may be distracted by Lumosty’s last-start win but Afleet Esprit is our pick to take out the Thousand Guineas. The Daid Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained filly will enjoy the inside run after drawing barrier one and will partner the top Guineas jockey Damien Oliver, who has 5 wins from 17 rides to his name. She’s a winner and is in perfect form following three consecutive wins, including the Thousand Guineas Prelude. Will be in the finish.

2nd

#1 Bring Me The Maid ($7)

Her form was brilliant until her last run and was ruling favourite for the Guineas before the other day. The Guineas Prelude favourite disappointed after she failed to place to Afleet Esprit but blinkers and a tongue-tie should help her return to a win. Has been showing great form in training.

3rd

#8 Tahni Dancer ($15)

For punters looking for a long bet in the Thousand Guineas, Tahni Dancer is the one for you. The Clinton McDonald-trained filly will start midfield from barrier five with Nicholas Hall to ride. Is peaking at the right time following a maiden win at Cranbourne last month and a runner-up finish to sprint star Eloping in the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m).
