Two jockeys are currently fighting over the right to ride Caulfield Cup winner Descarado in the 2010 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 2 after Gai Waterhouse said stable hoop Nash Rawiller would get the mount ahead of Chris Munce.
Champion Queensland-based jockey Munce was aboard Descarado last Saturday for the 2010 Caulfield Cup win, giving Waterhouse her maiden victory in the world’s richest 2400m handicap and securing for himself the ‘Group 1 grand slam’.
However, despite his brilliant Caulfield Cup ride Munce is unlikely to be aboard Descarado in the $6 million Melbourne Cup this spring.
Waterhouse stated that she would give the coveted Melbourne Cup mount to Nash Rawiller ensuring he can get down to the 54kg Descarado has been allocated to carry following his 1.5kg Melbourne Cup penalty.
Getting down to the 54kg in time for the Melbourne Cup is a challenge for Rawiller, whose lightest-weighted ride in recent years being 54.5kg with More Joyous in last year’s Silver Slipper Stakes, but Waterhouse has ensured that if he makes the weight he will ride Descarado.
“The understanding is that Nash is our stable jockey and he has first call on all the horses if he can make the weight. If he cannot, then I seek the services of another jockey,” Waterhouse stated on her blog.
If Rawiller is unable to get down to the weight then Waterhouse will give the ride to Chris Munce, however Munce is adamant he had been booked for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup rides.
“I don’t want to elaborate, but I believe I was booked for the horse in both races and still am,” Munce said.
Munce is already a Melbourne Cup winning jockey after riding Jezabeel to victory in the 1998 Melbourne Cup, while Rawiller is yet to be aboard a Melbourne Cup winner.
This Saturday Rawiller has the chance to win the 2010 Cox Plate as he takes the mount on glamour mare More Joyous.
Currently More Joyous is the $7 second favourite to win the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on Saturday following So You Think.
