2017 Queensland Oaks for Bracelet Winner Dawn Wall

Chris Waller’s class filly Dawn Wall ran an ideal early Queensland Oaks 2017 lead-up at the Gold Coast on Hollindale Stakes Day taking out the Gold Coast Bracelet.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock posted her fourth win from six career starts, travelling to Queensland for the first time and dominating betting on the $125,000 Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m).

It was a notable drop in grade for Waller’s Sydney-trained filly after her mid-field sixth on March 25 at Rosehill in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).

Prior to that Dawn Wall was seen enjoying her maiden black-type success in the Group 3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m).

On the back of two trials, the favourite was fit and ready to fire in the Gold Coast Bracelet and was given the gun ride from a wide alley by Hugh Bowman.

Bowman had her settled just off the pace early while the consistent Steven O’Dea-trained Candika, coming off the dominant Listed Princess Stakes (1600m) win at Doomben, did all the work to cross from her outside barrier to lead.

Jockey Damian Browne led the field around on Candika who sat ahead of the James Cummings-trained Savvan, while Bowman bid his time on Dawn Wall third on the outside of her stablemate Invincibella.

Approaching the turn for home, Bowman peeled out three wide and went forward on the favourite who strode up to hit the lead and pull clear for a one and a half length win over Peter & Paul Snowden’s consistent So You Think filly The Pinnacle.

Rounding out the Gold Coast Bracelet trifecta in a brave third having used up plenty of early energy was the front runner Candika.

Dawn Wall is expected to progress towards the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 3 via the traditional path running next-up on May 20 in the $175,000 Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben.

Waller won the Queensland Oaks two years ago with his now superstar mare Winx.
