The Lloyd Williams-owned stayer Chance To Dance heads a capacity Adelaide Cup 2017 field for Morphettville on Monday and gives the kilos away as the 58kg top weight in the two mile clash.
A full line-up of 20 starters plus three emergencies make up the final acceptances for this autumn’s edition of the always-popular $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m).
Prepared by Robert Hickmott at Williams’ Mt Macedon stables in Victoria, Chance To Dance is set to make his South Australian race debut in the Adelaide Cup field next week.
He comes off a second to Northwest Passage in the Listed Torney Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley with 58kg on his back and carries the same kilos from barrier three with Ben Melham riding in the Group 2.
Owner Williams is chasing his fourth Adelaide Cup win after previous success with subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Just A Dash (1981), Gallic (2007) and Muir (2011).
Following in the Adelaide Cup weights on 56.5kg is one of two Darren Weir-trained runners in the mix, Master Of Arts.
Damian Lane jumps aboard the in-form Mastercraftsman grey who carried a half-kilo more to victory last weekend in the traditional Adelaide Cup lead-up – the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m).
Weir has also accepted for Lord Van Percy who suffered an early blow and will jump from barrier 20 of 20 in the feature race of Adelaide Cup Day.
Both of Weir’s stayers also feature in the 2017 Sydney Cup First Acceptances for Randwick’s 3200m feature during ‘The Championships’ in April.
The other Lord Reims Stakes placegetters out to frank the form in Monday’s lucrative showdown are the Wayne Walters-trained Puccini (2nd) and local stayer Jim’s Journey (3rd) for Morphettville trainer Peter Blanch.
Six-year-old Encosta De Lago stallion Puccini prepared at Mt Gambier carried 55kg for his brave Lord Reims second as a $41 roughie in betting and rises to 55.5kg next-up.
Dom Tourneur retains the ride on Jim’s Journey who has work to do from a wide Adelaide Cup barrier draw, but the gelding comes back from 56.5kg to 55.5kg in the Group 2.
Also coming off a nice lead-up run beaten a length when fourth in the Lord Reims Stakes is Reset four-year-old Mail It In.
The grey is trained by Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas and faces a notable distance test having only won up to 2020m to date.
Other notable Adelaide Cup horses accepted into the field this autumn include the Danny O’Brien-trained De Little Engine coming off a close fourth under two lengths beaten in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) at Flemington on March 4 and the rails-drawn French import Darabad.
Four-year-old Dansili stallion Darabad has his first run in Australia in the Adelaide Cup, his last start producing a fourth to Japanese stayer Makahiki in the Group 2 Prix Niel (2400m) in France in September last year.
Trainer Robbie Laing is also represented by Double Bluff and the duo are drawn the two inside alleys with Noel Callow on Darabad (1) and Joe Bowditch riding roughie chance Double Bluff (2).
