2015 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes Field & Betting Odds

The final field and betting markets for the feature race at Moonee Valley in Melbourne this weekend are now out with the returning John O’Shea-trained Contributer the odds-on favourite to win.

A dozen spring gallopers make up the field for this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m), which runs as Moonee Valley Race 7 at 4:05pm (AEST) on Saturday.

Current Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are firmly led by Godolphin’s multiple Group 1 winning stallion Contributer, the High Chaparral six-year-old at an odds-on price of $1.90 to win first-up.

He won three on the trot during his last campaign back in autumn including the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) back-to-back to see out his prep.

Saturday will be his first Melbourne run since an eighth in last November’s Emirates Stakes, but the bookies are taking no chances on the nicely drawn Dwayne Dunn mount in barrier two in the weight-for-age showdown.

Contributer is also early favourite at $9 through Ladbrokes to win the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) back at Moonee Valley on October 24, for which the Dato’ is the traditional lead-up into.

Just two other runners are under double figures in Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes betting with The Cleaner ($5.50) and Mourinho ($6.50) who ran the quinella last time out at Caulfield in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on August 15.

Mick Burles’s popular Tassie galloper The Cleaner was narrowly beaten by a nose in the Lawrence Stakes first-up and this weekend chases his first win since the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley last September.

That was his fourth victory at the track he returns to on Saturday and which he boasts a gun record at (7-4-1-1) leading into his rematch with eight-year-old Oratorio gelding Mourinho.

Currently prepared by Darryl Blackshaw, Mourinho is a veteran of 36 starts but had enough in his legs to run The Cleaner down and win the Lawrence Stakes last time out, an effort he’ll look to repeat going up to the mile in the Dato.

The next best in betting are then the rails-drawn Tony McEvoy-trained Duke Of Marmalade import Big Memory ($11) coming off a fourth in the Lawrence takes and Dibayani ($12).

Hong Kong import Dibayani is now prepared in Melbourne by Lindsay Park’s David Hayes & Tom Dabernig and debuted down under in the PB Lawrence running a nice third behind his Dato rivals Mourniho and The Cleaner, beaten just over a length.

Other notable hopes in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes line-up this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival include triple Group 1 winner Foreteller ($16) who hasn’t won a race since the 2014 Underwood Stakes and the fellow Chris Waller-trained Bagman ($21).

Nine-year-old Dansili gelding Foreteller comes off a seventh to stablemate Royal Descent in Sydney’s Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) two weeks ago, while fellow nine-year-old Bagman won over 2040m at Moonee Valley carrying 60kg on August 1.
