2014 Doomben Cup Betting Update

Betting markets for the Doomben Cup 2014 running in Brisbane this Saturday are starting to heat up with Darren Weir’s evergreen veteran Akzar the early market mover.

Running as Doomben Race 7 at 3:40pm, this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Titan Energy Services Doomben Cup (2000m) features a small but classy field of 10 hopefuls.

Heading the latest Doomben Cup betting odds at a steady $4.20 is the Guy Walter-trained Streama, a five-year-old daughter of Stratum out to become the fifth horse since 2002 to complete the Hollindale Stakes – Doomben Cup double.

She won the Group 2 Gold Coast feature a fortnight ago in the mud, but Walter rates her an even stronger chance on firmer ground that she gets in Brisbane this weekend.

Akzar has been smashed in from $5.50 to $4.80 to win Saturday’s Doomben Cup

While odds on the favourite have remained same since Doomben Cup final field markets opened on Wednesday, the price on the second elect Leebaz have come in from $4.50 to $4.40.

Hailing from the stables of father and sons training team the Hawkes, the Zabeel four-year-old faces their first big test here racing over further than a mile for the first time.

They’ve won six of their nine starts to date but having only had two Group runs to date when runner-up to Weary in the G3 Doncaster Prelude two back and then their last start G3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) victory on May 3.

The genuine Doomben Cup market mover meanwhile in from $5.50 to $4.80 is then Akzar who is after their fifth win from their past seven starts.

Last time out the 35-start veteran enjoyed a blistering six length success in the Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m) thriving on a Heavy (10) track on May 1 from the outside barrier (16).

Recent rainfall in Brisbane has seen Doomben downgraded from a Good (3) to a Dead (4), and more wet weather predicted over the next 24 hours the punters are coming from the known mudlark in the field.

Junoob has also firmed in the Doomben Cup odds from $5.50 to $5 to hand Chris Waller with back-to-back victories following the success of Beaten Up last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

They come off a fourth in the Hollindale Stakes and could be retired after their run on Saturday.

The final single figure chance is then Mr O’Cierin who has eased out from $8 to $9 to turn the tables on Streama following their second in the Hollindale.

While improvement is expected from some the Postponed gelding goes better on top of the ground and so the recent rain has frightened off some of their fans.
