2014 The Roses Betting Led by Arabian Gold

Rails-drawn filly Arabian Gold should get the run of the race in The Roses 2014 at Doomben on Saturday and is the short priced favourite to win the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival showdown.

Running as Doomben Cup Day Race 6 at 3:05pm this year’s $175,000 Group 2 XXXX Gold The Roses (2000m) features a full field of 16 starters with Arabian Gold to wear the number one saddlecloth.

The grey daughter of Dubawi also starts from barrier one, Blake Shinn back aboard, and is the $2.20 favourite in The Roses betting to score her third on the trot.

She’s heading towards a run in the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on May 31 and gets a top opportunity here to jump favourite in that race with another win.

Last start Damien Oliver guided her to a nice victory over Pheidon in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Randwick on April 26, before which she enjoyed an earlier win at the same track and distance in the Adrian Knox Stakes run on a Heavy (9).

While the track conditions in Brisbane are to be a little firmer on the weekend, she’s tipped to make it a hat-trick as she races over her pet distance again.

There may be a capacity line-up for The Roses this year but only one of Arabian Gold’s rivals is currently joining her under $10 in the markets with Hera at $4.40.

Drawn in gate four with Jim Cassidy to ride, the Kris Lees-trained O’Reilly filly is after win number six at her 13th career start here.

She comes via a Group 3 James Carr (1400m) run at Randwick from the same day Arabian Gold won the Frank Packer where she ran fourth to Estonian Princess.

That was the New Zealand import’s maiden start down under however following some good Kiwi form back home including her Group 2 Tristam Classic (2000m) victory in February.

With a run under her belt now, time to acclimatise and getting back up to 2000m conditions look ripe for Hera to shine in The Roses.

The rest of the field is all at double figures to score an upset.

The next best in betting though are then Rock Diva ($10) and Asadauskaite ($11) who both have wide barriers (14 and 15) to overcome.

Tony Pike’s New Zealand-trained daughter of Lucky Unicorn, Rock Diva has her first run down under here following a Doomben trial on Tuesday where she ran fourth over 1000m.

In her last run back home she came off back-to-back 2100m wins to finish a nice third behind Miss Mossman in the Group 1 NZ Oaks (2400m), so while she’s down in distance here, she’s got great form and ability over the 2000m.

Michael Moroney’s Pentire filly Asadauskaite meanwhile broke her maiden status two back at Kensington over 1800m and raced over the same distance on Hollindale Stakes Day at the Gold Coast two weeks ago in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m).

She put in a good run that day to finish third but was still beaten five lengths and will need to improve as she sees the 2000m for the first time.

Other notable hopes that could represent great value on the day then include Rex Lipp’s Gold Coast Bracelet winner Tinto ($13) and the David Lawlor-trained Rosey Joan ($17) who comes off back-tob-ack wins at the Sunshine Coast and Ipswich respectively.
