Mighty Boss Is the Upset 2017 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Winner

Local horseman Mick Price has secured his first Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas win in 2017 scoring a massive boilover result in the stallion-making classic with race emergency Mighty Boss.

The Not A Single Doubt colt jumped a $101 roughie in the Group 1 $2 million Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) only making the line-up earlier in the week with the scratching of Summer Passage.

Mighty Boss went into the Caulfield Guineas field at the triple-figure price having had just one win in his previous five starts saluting in a maiden at Sale back in January.

His lead-up run was a close Moonee Valley fourth behind Showtime in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) and on Saturday became the first Caulfield Guineas winner out of that fellow mile race since Whobegotyou did the double back in 2008.

“I always wanted to target the race with him,” Boss said post-win.

“It’s just a great story.

“I liked him as a yearling…and this is the result.

“He’s not the sort of horse you’d usually buy, but you have to seek around the bargains sometimes.

“We never gave up on him.

“A little bit of magic this race.”

The shock Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas result also saw Mighty Boss become the longest-priced winner of the spring showdown since Abaridy (250/1) in 1986.

It was Sircconi taking up front-running position in the Caulfield Guineas this spring, going right around the outside from a wide draw to lead from the Stan Fox Stakes winner Gold Standard.

The Blue Diamond Stakes winning filly Catchy, the only one taking on the boys in the race, settled well midfield.

On the straight it was the Godolphin-raced Kementari looming at the 300m, moving up to take the lead on the back of a lead-up third in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

Catchy also got going in the closing stages, but out of nowhere Mighty Boss arrived on the scene up the inside flying home for the upset win at the huge price.

In the end the official Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas trifecta had Mighty Boss ($101) a quarter-length to the line first ahead of Kementari ($5.50), while the Lindsay Park-trained Catchy ($4.40F) finished third as the beaten favourite just ahead of Royal Symphony ($4.80).
