Lindermann Bounces Back to Win the 2025 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick
Chris Waller’s stable favourite Lindermann returned to winning form in emphatic fashion on Saturday, claiming the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick with a gutsy front-running performance under loyal jockey Nash Rawiller.

The six-year-old son of Lonhro, bred and raced by Debbie Kepitis’ Woppitt Bloodstock, defied recent form and heavy track struggles to deliver a timely reminder of his class on a firm surface.
Lindermann’s lead-up to the Chelmsford Stakes was far from ideal. He finished near the tail in the Group 1 Winx Stakes first-up, but Waller and his team attributed the poor showing to the heavy Randwick track.
Despite the setback, Waller noted the horse had never looked better in training, prompting the team to press on.
Rawiller, who won the 2023 Rosehill Guineas aboard Lindermann, was asked to stick with the horse despite recent form, and his faith was rewarded.
“He’s a stable favourite, right up there in the top few,” Waller said. “We put our heads together and said, this horse has never worked better. Nash said, ‘he’s been good to me. I’ll stick with him.’ As they say, the band is back together.”
Jumping from barrier nine, Lindermann ($11) crossed to lead early and dictated the tempo throughout.
Rawiller kept him in rhythm, gradually increasing the pace before the turn.
Race favourite Ceolwulf loomed from midfield, while Melbourne Cup-bound Sir Delius made a wide run from barrier ten.
Lindermann, however, kept finding under pressure, holding off the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott trained import Sir Delius by a head in a photo finish, with fellow Melbourne Cup hopeful also with Waterhouse & Bott Vauban finishing strongly for third.
“This was his race today on a platter,” Rawiller said. “He’s the best horse in the race. I knew he wouldn’t let me down.”
The win marked Waller’s eighth Chelmsford Stakes victory and reaffirmed Lindermann’s credentials as a top-tier miler.
With the dry track proving key, Waller confirmed Lindermann will now be aimed at the $1 million 7 Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in two weeks’ time on September 20.
The victory also boosted Lindermann’s career earnings past AU$2.2 million, with six wins and nine placings from 32 starts.
Meanwhile, runner-up Sir Delius impressed in his Australian debut and is now the $9 co-favourite for the Group 1 $10 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 4, while Vauban remains a strong contender for the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double.
