Away Game Heading Back to the Paddock Following Dominant Percy Sykes Stakes Win

The Golden Slipper form stacked up at Randwick on Saturday as the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained Away Game made short work of her fellow two-year-old fillies in the Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m).

The Snitzel filly was having her sixth run in after finishing runner-up in the Slipper last month and was installed as the even-money favourite with Glen Boss in the saddle. The champion jockey chose to sit up on the speed early and found himself with clear running room to kick away over the final 200m, but it was Away Game’s toughness and turn of foot on the heavy track that stood out most.

Some chose to doubt her stamina having been up since mid-December, but she always looked the best chance after following up her debut win at Doomben with a win in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast.

Now with four wins from six starts, Away Game has to be considered as the best 2YO filly in the country. Stable rep Annabel Neasham agreed but said a trip to the paddock is definitely on the agenda.

“She’s just a bonny filly, she loves being in work, just can’t wait until she turns into a three-year-old,” Neasham told Sky Racing.

“I’d say she will get a break now and concentrate on the Spring.”

The stable has done a great job spacing Away Game’s starts with at least three weeks in between her runs. She doesn’t have that elusive Group 1 to her name just yet, but Boss was also happy to throw her name in the ring for best two-year-old of the year.

“I’m confident she just put her hand up for two-year-old of the year just there. My vote she is two-year-old of the year. She has just done an incredible job,” Boss said.
