Punters could get an early eye on next year’s Golden Slipper contenders at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with the running of the Golden Gift 2019, betting on the million-dollar feature led by the proven two-year-old Tanker.
Set to run as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:55pm (AEDT), this season’s $1,000,000 Golden Gift (1100m) has attracted a capacity line-up of juveniles with the favourite, Tanker, drawn the rails.
Jockey Ben Allen retains the ride on the well-bred Pride Of Dubai colt who took out the Listed Debutant Stakes (1000m) by over two lengths on October 12 at Caulfield.
The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained horse has been kept fit with a subsequent Randwick trial win and looks sure to handle the 1100m second-up after the powerful debut.
The latest Golden Gift odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have Tanker at $3.30, the race serving as a very early lead-up to the Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper back at Rosehill in March of 2020.
Tanker is a $31 shot in ante-post 2020 Golden Slipper betting, a price sure to firm if he becomes the latest Golden Gift winner.
The first and second place-getters in the Golden Gift results on Saturday will be automatically qualified for a Golden Slipper Stakes bid based on prizemoney earned.
After the early withdrawal of stablemate Anders (4) the Maher & Eustace are still dually represented in the Golden Gift field with the widely drawn Cellsabeel at $21 for the upset.
Following Tanker in Golden Gift betting is early market mover Blaze A Trail ($6.50 into $4.80) to be ridden by Tim Clark.
The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Criterion colt makes his debut on the back of two impressive October trial wins in Sydney.
A wide barrier hasn’t stopped the punters coming for former star galloper Criterion’s first two-year-old starter who will boost his sire’s stud value with a Golden Gift win in 2019 following fertility issues that have plagued the multiple Group 1 winner in his post-racing career.
Team Snowden dominate the field with three other runners: the widely drawn duo of Brazen Beau colt Endorse ($34) and I Am Invincible filly Close To Me ($17) both racing second-up, along with Dame Giselle ($13) in barrier three.
Dame Giselle defeated both her aforementioned stablemates home when runner-up to See You Soon in the Kirkham Plate (1000m) at Randwick late last month and presents fitter and ready to improve here.
“When you can win this sort of prizemoney this early in the season, it takes the pressure off,” co-trainer Peter Snowden told The Daily Telegraph this week.
“If you haven’t got any prizemoney going into the autumn, it means you need to have your two-year-old wound up early.
“It might take say three runs to qualify and then you have to peak again for the Grand Final on Slipper Day, which isn’t easy. But a top-two finish in the Golden Gift means you might be able to get away with one lead-up run in autumn.”
Rounding out the single figure hopefuls are then the Bjorn Baker-trained Choisir colt Malkovich on debut following a huge 6.6 length trial win over 905m at Rosehill on October 29 and the Kirkham Plate winner See You Soon ($8.50) for Goulburn’s Jean Dubois.
