A bumper five Group 1 races headline the Sydney racing action on Saturday including the three-year-olds facing off the Rosehill Guineas 2018, tips and updated odds including the firming price on the NZ Derby winner Vin De Dance detailed below.
A full field of young stayers is assembled for this year’s Group 1 $600,000 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) with 18 to do battle in Race 6 at 3:25pm (AEDT).
The early Rosehill Guineas betting market mover at Ladbrokes.com.au well backed in from $9 to $6 with the predicted Heavy track is the Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman-trained Vin De Dance.
Last seen winning the Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m) across the Tasman on March 3, the Roc De Cambes gelding is also one of the few in Saturday’s race with winning form on Heavy ground.
The Kiwis have won three of the past five editions of the Rosehill Guineas including Gingernuts (2017) last year who came off a NZ Derby win and It’s A Dundeel in 2013 for Vin De Dance’s co-trainer Baker.
Vin De Dance certainly ticks plenty of boxes but he is only the third favourite in the Rosehill Guineas odds with reigning VRC Derby winner Ace High ($4.60) and the Chris Waller-trained D’Argento ($5) both above him in betting.
So will the top fancies run the trifecta or is there value to be had tipping a Rosehill Guineas upset from the likes of Darren Weir’s rails-drawn galloper Cliff’s Edge ($7.50) or the widely-drawn NZ Derby runner-up Mongolianconqueror ($16) for last year’s winning trainers Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards who has the outside gate?

#2 Vin De Dance ($6)
Happy to follow the money trail and tip the NZ Derby winner to add to the outstanding record of Kiwi three-year-olds in the Rosehill Guineas. Chases the same double Gingernuts completed last year and the fact we get a Heavy-rated track makes the drop back from 2400m to 2000m easier. That rain-affected track works to this horse’s favour, while many of the main dangers are a query in the going. Gets a gun run from gate three and Baker certainly knows how to train a good, staying 3YO.

#14 Main Stage ($21)
Nice price offered on this Cranbourne-trained Reliable Man gelding who is a dual placegetter from as many starts on Heavy going. Sees a wet track for the first time since August last year, but has that form to fall back on where others don’t. Happy to excuse the lead-up Australian Guineas 10th over a mile. Third-up he’ll be reaching a better level of fitness and he won third-up last preparation. VRC Derby fifth when under three lengths beaten suggests he will relish getting out to 2000m here for the first time since. Can surprise with the conditions and is out to atone.

#4 Cliff’s Edge ($7.50)
Weir’s Canford Cliffs colt is out to make history coming off a win in Moonee Valley’s Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) from last Friday night. It’s a double that hasn’t been done in at least the past 30 years, but he handles quick back-ups and is right in this. Needs to work to stay out of trouble from that inside barrier, but presents as a genuine threat if he handles the Sydney-way of racing that he is as yet untested at.
