2018 Australia Day Cup Field & Odds: Cordero Hot Favourite

The Hawkes Racing-trained Cordero is the clear favourite to continue his summer winning streak dominating Australia Day Cup 2018 field and betting markets for Friday’s Warwick Farm feature.

Due to run as Race 6 at 4:00pm (AEDT), this season’s Listed $150,000 Australia Day Cup (2400m) has attracted 10 quality stayers.

Sitting top of the Australia Day Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is in-form Gio Ponti four-year-old Cordero at $2.80 who has won his past three Sydney runs on the trot.

Undefeated over the mile-and-a-half, the galloper comes off back-to-back 2400m victories at Randwick, the latest on January 13 carrying 57.5kg to a one length success.

This long weekend Cordero comes back to just 53kg and with Brenton Avdulla booked for the ride, he shapes up as a hard-to-beat favourite against some experienced veterans.

A further three gallopers are under $10 in the latest Australia Day Cup betting markets including the $5.50 second elect Vassal drawn one outside the favourite in barrier four with Tye Angland to ride.

Representing Sydney’s best Chris Waller, Dansili six-year-old Vassal races for the first time since his second to Prince Cheri at Randwick on New Year’s Day in the Listed Tattersall’s Cup (2400m).

Prior to that the gelding saluted by nearly two lengths in mid-December’s Listed Christmas Cup (2400m), but he will need to dig deep here going up to 56kg in the weights.

The early Australia Day Cup market mover backed into $7 is then perennial placegetter Mighty Lucky.

After four fourth-place finishes on the trop including in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) beaten only a length in each at Randwick in December, the Fred Cowell-trained eight-year-old was last seen finishing third in the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) on January 18.

An evergreen veteran that doesn’t know how to run a bad race, Mighty Lucky lines-up in his 60th career start on Friday and is out to break a winning drought extending back to May of 2016.

Rounding out the single-figure fancies at $8.50 is then Waller’s other runner Montauk, Hugh Bowman to ride the More Than Ready five-year-old from gate five.

Winner of the Summer Cup on Boxing Day, Montauk is also a Gosford Gold Cup graduate having placed fifth behind the winner Singing.

In a close market punters may be seeking the value in the field and that could lie in the 60.5kg topweight Destiny’s Kiss ($11).

Dual Melbourne Cup winning hoop Corey Brown partners the small-framed stayer from the local Warwick Farm stables of Joe Pride, Destiny’s Kiss making his 80th appearance.

The nine-year-old ran sixth with 61kg on his back in the Gosford Cup last time out and was last seen in the winner’s stall back in October when carting 60kg to victory in the Listed Tattersall’s Cup (2400m) at Randwick.

Destiny’s Kiss is also the reigning Australia Day Cup winner having saluted in the race 12 months ago with 59.5kg on his back following a Gosford Cup third.
