Fox Hall Heads 2017 Adelaide Guineas Field

Tony McEvoy’s last start Nitschke Stakes winner Fox Hall heads the Adelaide Guineas 2017 field on South Australian Derby Day at Morphettville Racecourse this Saturday.

Due to run as Morphettville Race 6 at 3:50pm (ACST), this season’s $150,000 Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m) attracted a capacity field of three-year-old milers.

Already the first emergency Enki has gained a start after the early scratching of Silvera who drew out wide.

Silvera’s stablemate Fox Hall remains in the mix for McEvoy and is drawn barrier 13, which will only come in one if the other emergencies fail to gain a run.

Damien Thornton retains the ride on the nicely-bred son of Foxwedge who enjoyed his third career win taking out the Listed Nitschke Stakes (1400m) at the Morphettville Parks track a fortnight back from a similarly wide alley (13 of 14).

This will be the up-and-comer’s second look at a mile, his first producing a mid-field finish behind Zunbaqa in a Benchmark 70 at Sandown-Hillside on March 15.

The other best out of the Nitschke Stakes running in the Adelaide Guineas on the course proper is the Phillip Stokes-trained runner-up Cappadocia who drew gate nine for the rematch.

A consistent daughter of Northern Meteor, the filly has run top two in her past three starts and looks a big hope again of finishing in the money this weekend after being beaten just a length as a $31 roughie in her lead-up run.

Stokes has also accepted for Smart Manoeuvre who gets the rails run in the Adelaide Guineas from barrier one with Noel Callow aboard.

Smart Missile filly Smart Manoeuvre has posted just the one win in her 10-start career so far and is out to atone for her disappointing 11th in the Nitschke Stakes when beaten nearly nine lengths.

Third emergency Trogir is also prepared by Stokes, but looks unlikely to make the starting line-up on Saturday.

Over from Victoria for the first time, the Michael Moroney-trained son of Fastnet Rock Milwaukee is also high up the ratings after winning the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) defeating Sword Of Light two back.

The gelding’s last start was a fifth to Egg Tart over the Flemington mile on Anzac Day, form that was franked last weekend when the Chris Waller-trained winner took out Adelaide’s Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2010m).

Accepted for a short seven day back-up after a nice Morphettville run on Oaks Day is the Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained So You Too drawn the second widest alley.

The son of dual Cox Plate winner So You Think caught the eye as a $15 shot in betting when under a length away third behind Sweet Sherry in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m).

He’ll be stepping up to a mile for the second time on the quick turnaround, his other 1600m start a failed last (10th) to Comin’ Through in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.

The stable is also in with Rebel Raider gelding Wasabi Bob who has excellent form over the distance (3-2-1-0) and second emergency Ace Attack who is also a son of the 2009 SA Derby winner.
