Lindsay Park’s classy filly Madeenaty handled her first start the right-handed way of racing with an impressive all-the-way Wyong win on Thursday to confirm her favouritism for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2017 at the Gold Coast next month.
The progressive daughter of Exceed And Excel jumped the $1.90 odds-on favourite for her maiden run outside of Melbourne in the $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m).
Drawn wide in barrier nine of nine, jockey Mark Zahra took the only option he believed he had and went straight to the front of the pack aboard the Maribyrnong Trial winner.
“Wyong, drawing the outside, there was only one option, especially when you’ve got one going the other way for the first time, it’s always good to have the rail,” Zahra said post-victory on Thursday.
“We had to use her a bit [early].
“I don’t think she liked this track.
“She’s got a really big stride, and she struggled a little bit.
“But she was too strong in the end, she didn’t want much further today.
“There was one on the inside kicking up a little bit [early].
“So I think first start for a little while, having to work hard early, she’s done a good job.”
Madeenaty had been freshened-up since her last start third at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day in Group 3 class, but had enough fitness to hold off a fast-finishing Single Bullet for her second career win.
The all-the-way Wyong victory was impressive on the tight track and Zahra said it was an especially nice feeling to salute having gotten down to the 54.5kg light-weight to continue his association with the filly.
“It’s extra special riding 54.5kg; I’ve had to do it pretty tough the last week and a half,” he said.
“I’m thankful to the Hayes team.
“I picked her early, that let me stay on her and she repaid the faith today.”
Co-trainer Ben Hayes, who prepares horses in partnership with his father David and uncle Tom Dabernig, was trackside on Thursday and full of post-win praise for Madeenaty.
“We were always confident,” he said.
“She ran some quick times at Benalla.
“We’ve always had an opinion of her, and it was good to see her do it today.
“She’s got great gate speed, that’s a good asset for a two-year-old to have.
“She’s had to work to cross them, so it was good to see her finish it off.”
The Gary Portelli-trained runner-up Single Bullet made an immediate impression on debut having made up all the ground after missing the kick in the Wyong Magic Millions Classic.
The Not A Single Doubt colt, ridden by Koby Jennings, managed to cross only a neck away from the winner and has firmed into $10 in pre-field Magic Millions Gold Coast Classic betting at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Madeenaty at $6.
Rounding out the trifecta on Thursday in third was the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained filly Dinnigan, also on debut, ridden by Tommy Berry.
Looking a little green, the daughter of Snitzel came off a runaway trial win at Randwick and brought that form to the races when crossing a half-length of Madeenaty.
Berry won’t be there at the Gold Coast on January 14 for the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) however after copping a careless riding suspension for his ride on Dinnigan at Wyong.
He caused interference to the Chris Waller-trained Madame Moustache around the 500m mark, that filly eventually running a luckless fifth beaten just under three lengths.
Berry rode previous Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic winners Karuta Queen (2011) and Driefontein (2012).
The latter was the fourth winner of the feature prepared by Waterhouse who looks a strong chance of enjoying a fifth victory in 2017 with Dinnigan who now occupies the second line of the futures markets at $8.
