Lees Dominates 2016 The Provincial Championships Final Field

The special condition event is open only to horses coming through the Provincial Championship qualifiers, this year’s $400,000 The Provincial Championships Final (1400m) to run as Randwick Race 3 at 12:45pm (AEDT) on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’.

A capacity line-up of 15 starters plus four emergencies are accepted for the lucrative middle-distance clash, the bulk of which come from the Broadmeadow stables of Lees.

Eight of his final acceptors are guaranteed a run while Magic Of Dreams (14) is the first emergency awaiting an early scratching to gain a start on Saturday.

The top-weighted of his contingent with 56kg is I Am Invincible four-year-old Powerline, the grey coming off a third in a 1200m Gosford qualifier from March 24.

He was defeated only a length by stablemate Zestful that day, and chases his maiden Randwick win at his third run at the track on the weekend.

Redoute’s Choice mare Zestful is also in the mix for the Final rematch, the in-form four-year-old debuting at Randwick.

She has had five career starts so far for three wins and a second, Saturday her toughest test to date.

Zestful has Kerrin McEvoy aboard again on the 54kg minimum, but has suffered an early blow drawing the far outside alley in the bumper field.

Lees’ other last start winner in the line-up is Rustic Melody (11), another four-year-old mare by star sire Snitzel.

She improved on a dead last when 14th behind Kanji on New Year’s Day at Randwick after a freshen-up to salute over 1400m at Hawkesbury in a qualifier from March 31.

Other notable hopes for Lees in the race include Electric Power who hoop of the moment Hugh Bowman rides and Marple Miss who drops down from 55.5kg to 54kg as the four-year-old Not A Single Doubt mare looks to go one better than her second at Wyong in the wet from March 20.

Winner of the Wyong 1350m qualifier, run on a Heavy (8) track, Hetty Heights looks one of the top fancies for the $400,000 finale on the weekend.

Kim Waugh prepares the Written Tycoon mare who has won four from nine, including her past two on the trot, but who is yet to win over further than 1350m or have a run at Randwick.

Still, she did it by one and a half lengths last time out and is well-weighted with 54kg in a good barrier five draw for Brenton Avdulla on Saturday.

Heading The Provincial Championships Final field and weights this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival is the in-form Supreme Effort also representing Wyong’s Waugh.

Sam Clipperton jumps aboard the Shaft gelding who shoots for three straight wins, but who gives the weight away carrying 57.5kg.

It is a weight the five-year-old has saluted under before however carrying it to victory last time out at his home track in early March from a wide barrier 12 of 15 draw.

Supreme Effort proved his subsequent fitness with a winning 1150m trial at Beaumont on March 29 when defeating Group 1 winner Lucia Valentina who runs in the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) this Saturday.

Waugh is also represented by Shamardal six-year-old His Majesty who was runner-up to Supreme Effort last start and who jumps from the second widest alley on the weekend.
