The futures betting markets for the 2011 Australian Guineas have opened at online bookmakers around the country with the Peter Moody-trained Anacheeva and Danny O’Brien’s Star Witness the early favourites to win the Group 1 feature running at Flemington on Saturday March 5.
The $750,000 Australian Guineas (1600m) attracted 165 nominations this year, with classy colt Anacheeva the current $10 equal favourite in the [sportsbet] markets along with Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Star Witness.
During the spring Anacheeva rose to fame with three successive wins including their last start victory in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 9 while Starcraft colt Star Witness, winner of the 2010 Blue Diamond Stakes, scored their second Group 1 victory with a two length win in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.
Star Witness then backed up with a second place finish behind the mighty Black Caviar in the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic on November 6, but unlike Anacheeva is yet to win over 1600m.
Three runners occupy the next line of Australian Guineas betting with David Payne’s Caulfield Guineas third placegetter Masquerader, in-form local colt Mr Chard and consistent New Zealand filly We Can Say It Now all at a quote of $11.
Other top fancies in the early Australian Guineas odds at [sportsbet] are Sandown Guineas winner Pressday ($12), Peter Moody’s Blackfriars gelding Eclair Surprise ($17) and the Peter Snowden-trained Retrieve ($19) who ran third in the Victoria Derby during the spring.
There are a number of other Australian Guineas hopefuls at longer-priced odds that could prove to be great value including Western Australia’s multiple Group winning colt Playing God ($26) who won the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic last start at Ascot, Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily ($31), the Gai Waterhouse-trained More Strawberries ($41) and Caulfield Guineas runner-up Run For Levi ($41).
