A bumper race card is set to light up the Gold Coast Racecourse on Saturday January 15 with one of the top features of the day being the 2011 Magic Millions Cup (1400m).
The $328,000 Magic Millions Cup (1400m) has drawn a 10-horse final field with Group 1 Epsom Handicap winner Captain Sonador the early favourite to win sitting at a quote of around $3.60 in the online betting markets.
Set to carry a hefty 60kg, Shamardal four-year-old Captain Sonador has drawn barrier five for Saturday and is coming off an impressive win in the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) at the Gold Coast track on January 3 where they carried 59kg to victory.
Captain Sonador is one of three Toowoomba-based horses attempting glory in the Magic Millions Cup on Saturday along with the Norm Hilton-trained Bold Glance (barrier six) and Lucky Leak (barrier seven).
The other early favourites to become the 2011 Magic Millions Cup winner are Kelso Wood’s Danzero mare Zero Rock (barrier eight), 53kg lightweight Facile Tigre (barrier nine) and the 2009 season’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Phelan Ready (barrier two).
Zero Rock claimed three straight wins during November – December before finishing a game fifth in the Goldmarket Handicap last start from an unsuitably wide barrier. With a nice weight and Chris Munce in the mount the five-year-old is a live chance on Saturday.
Facile Tigre also comes right into contention in this year’s Magic Millions Cup, the consistent Catbird four-year-old dropping well back in the weights from the 56kg they carried to victory at the track on January 1 to just 53kg on Saturday.
Meanwhile, More Than Ready four-year-old Phelan Ready is looking to return to the Magic Millions winning spotlight, the $3.3 million earner coming off a gallant third in the Goldmarket Handicap.
The 2011 R.M. Williams Magic Millions Cup is the first of the three major features at the Gold Coast on Saturday, set to jump as Race 5 at 3:20pm.
The other two highlight events to enjoy a punt on are Races 6 and 7, the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) and the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).
