The Caulfield Cup was first run in 1879 when it was won by Newminster. Shortly after in 1885, Australia witnessed the worst fall in racing history during the Caulfield Cup. As the huge number of 44 horses turned onto the straight, 17 horses came crashing down, killing jockey Donald Nicholson.
The most successful jockey has been Scobie Breasley with five Caulfield Cup wins in 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945 and 1952. The most successful trainer is undoubtedly Bart Cummings with six wins in, 1980, 1977, 1974, 1969 and 1966.
