The Melbourne Cup 2017 results saw goliath racehorse owner Lloyd Williams run the quinella securing back-to-back victories and his record sixth Loving Trophy with the lightly-raced European three-year-old Rekindling flying under the light weight (51.5kg) to run down the also Irish-trained Johannes Vermeer for the win. Rekindling became the first international Melbourne Cup winner to salute first-up with a previous Australian start since Vintage Crop (1993) and was prepared by 24-year-old Joseph O’Brien whose father Aidan prepared the runner-up Johannes Vermeer. The 2017 Melbourne Cup Trifecta was rounded out by the William Mullins-trained Max Dynamite who was runner-up in the 2015 edition of the classic.
