Roughie Dee I Cee scores upset win in Premier’s Cup

In a surprise result the $41 outsider Dee I Cee was able to out stay the rest of the field with apprentice Rachel King collecting a winning double after scoring earlier in the day on the Gerald Ryan trained Mariquita.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Dee I Cee was having his second run back from a spell after finishing last of ten over 1400m at Rosehill a fortnight ago and will now head to the Group 3 $175,000 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) at Newcastle on September 15.

A good performance at Newcastle will see the former New Zealand trained six year old step up to Group 1 company in the $750,000 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on September 30.

“He ran a great race in the Newcastle Cup last year to run second and we are hoping to go to the Metropolitan and I think we will try to follow a similar path this time around and hopefully we can improve on last year’s performance,” co-trainer Adrian Bott said.

“It has been a long time coming for him unfortunately. He showed great staying ability in New Zealand. It has taken us a long time to get him to this form, we have been patient with him and hopefully it will pay dividends now.”

“He was in an unsuitable race first up over 1400m and he needed a trip like today and the pace was on early. The race panned out perfectly for him and there is still improvement to come.”

King was patient in the early and middle stages on Dee I Cee and sat back in the field while the leaders took a long time to work things out up front.

Tim Clark on Classic Uniform ($3.40 favourite) ended up taking up the job of setting the pace and the Gary Moore trained gelding battled on for second just ahead of Centre Pivot ($14) who was doing his best work late down the centre of the track.
